New to the site

I just found this site. It is exactly what I have been searching for... I am from Washington State. Last year I hunted elk 13.2 miles (GPS) from my truck. I packed all my stuff in and I will tell you this site will help me reduce the weight of my pack.

Let it be known that one see's many more animals in the back country then closer to the road. I was also alot more picky in shooting an elk. Iam also a bow hunter...

Welcome--I'm new too. Did you hunt Wash? I dayhunted into the Goat Rocks last year. Next year I'm goin in deeper and livin with the elk. Great site, huh?

I hunted the East side because I have 11 preference points. I have hunted Goat Rocks area... Do you know there are two ways to get into that area? Camp in there about 5-7 miles in. I know a guy who killed a monster backtail in there with drop tines. The eight people I know who hunt it either have horses(4) , lamas(2) or a strong back(2). Look at the map and you can figure it out. I found a heck of a place last year so I am going to unload a 100 grain broad head this year in an elk. It was my first year in this area and it sure showed me a ton animals.

I have a crap back pack (I lashed my day pack to my bull pack).
Garmin GPS & Wrist compass
My day pack is a Crocked Horn Outfitter
4 lb sleeping bag
2 man REI tent 4 lbs ( used when son or wife comes along)
1 Bivy sack ultra light weight
9 year old water purifier weights about 1.5 lbs
I usually cold camp because I did not want to take a stove.
96 oz Camelpac
4 huge elk canvas meat bags. I am going to reduce it down to 2.
100 feet of 1/8 inch rope
10X10 foot tarp
10X42 Swarovski EL Bino&#39;s with strap and cabellas bino cover.


I need to up grade
my junky pack,
sleeping bag,
10X10 foot tarp,
dump the water purifier and go with Iodine tables like Potable Aqua.

The Goat Rocks Wilderness (Rimrock Unit) actually is an Eastside Elk Unit. I&#39;m guessing the two ways are Top (off the Pacific Crest Trail) and bottom (where the roads up the two Tieton drainages end). I&#39;m glad to hear there&#39;s some big bucks in there (Blacktail, Mule Deer, Hybrid probably). Last year I really only made it into the far eastern edge where the ridge started becoming kind of alpine. I was looking 3-4 miles toward the summit wondering if there big bucks hanging around those meadows.
