how come california doesn't allow exotic hunting.........(I don't consider sheep and goats exotics.....may as well call hogs exotics........no offense to any sheep hunters).......I know in fresno and san luis they raise fallow deer.........and I've heard of some ranches with axis deer........but you never see anywhere to be able to hunt these.........by the way I was going to buy a couple of fallow deer.....bucks are $750 and does are around $500..........but after talking to the guy and finding out how dangerous they are I changed my mind......you also have to go through DFG to get permits...........still it seems there would be a place to be able to hunt these......I'd give my eye teeth for an axis.
A friend went on a guided buffalo hunt and I went with to take pics. I talked to the guide about this and he said there is a ranch that will allow you a trespass fee to get on and try to hunt the things. It was not his operation and he was not all that hot to describe it, so I let it pass, but as I recall it is somewhere near Hearst Castle. This is all hearsay until someone comes up with a number.
sounds to me like it's a "you pay to come onto the property and shoot at your own risk"...I don't know about that and wouldn't take a chance........Hearst Castle had that fire years ago and alot of the animals escaped...you can see zebras alot but if someone let you come onto his/her property and let you shoot one I bet there would be trouble.........I'm wondering why there are places that have exotics for sale but there isn't any places to hunt them.........is it a DFG nightmare or something to set up and operation like this?

Thanx Bwana Turtle......but again it's just hogs and sheep......and bison.......for $800.00 you can shoot a buffalo in Texas...in California they want upwards of $5000.00.....for the money you can fly to Texas.hunt bison,fallow deer and axis deer....have a good trip and still be cheaper than a buffalo in California.....I'm looking for exotic deer.........and doubt I'll find them.........I'd even like a blackbuck antelope........
Are the hunts in Cedar Canyon fair chase. Meaning the wild boars are actually wild and not planted there that same day?

It depends on your definition of fair chase. From what I have read (having never been there) they keep the place stocked with hogs between a certain set of numbers like for example between 50-150. When the number drops to 50 they get a new shipment. It is high fence. If you are hunting with a bow I hear those pigs get real educated as to what is going on and it is very difficult. I have heard some people go there with short range weapons and go home empty handed. However, that is the hogs, I don't get the impression the exotics are as much a challenge. Seeing as it is high fence, and a small (though steep and thickly covered) property, some people would always call it put and take. I doubt you are going to find pure blood European Boar anywhere in CA that is not in those conditions though.
i have been to that ranch twice and just saw one glance of a few boars, they were hauling ass in the brush. they were very vary and a good challenge. they are pure blooded europeans brought from canada directly. DFG will not let them be released in california. but cedar canyon is the only way in california where you can hunt pure russians not the free ranging crosses.
Yep this is true. They are planted they c ome from alberta canada. When I was living there I was going to go shoot one. They have a big outfit. They sell meat sausage etc. Then way out back you can archery hunt. They will give you a crossbow to use if you don't have anything. They have a trout pond too lol. Up there it was $300 canadian so whats that here like 10 bucks or something lol. I talked to the old boy on the phone he said you have a accent. Where you from I said california. He then told Me he was hauling a load of pigs to tehachapi. I said hey 45 minutes from where I was born. Anyways they are pure strain I've seen them myself. You should see what them things look like in that cold weather. super hairy look like low to the ground grizzly with long snout.

Bird dawg can you tell me what ranch this is in texas, u spiked my curiousity. I saw a website I cant remember the name of the place in California but they had 1400 dollar bison meat hunts.
Bighorn canyon ranch in riverside county has all sorts of exotics it is high fence but 1000 acres. haven't hunted there but may soon an soon as I get my bow
