THE SUPER ZAPPERS those ###magnums ###like the 7mm shooting times westener and the 300 ultra mag, that use super heavy powder charges and light weight bullet to get those super high velocitys have a far ,far, higher percentage of bullet failures at all ranges, burn out barrels much quicker, cost more for powder and brass, are much harder on your hearing and from my years of experiance give no advantages back for all the negitives untill shots exceed 300 yards (which has happend to me in thirty five years of hunting only once on elk and about 3 times on mule deer ,(and all of which I killed just fine with the rifle I had with me at the time) now I hunt 90% of the time with a 340 wby mag and 250 grain bullets or with one of the twins,35 whelen/338-06 ###or 358 win or the so recoil is not a problem either way as all those guns have moderate recoil but every one of the guys I hunt with has swapped to the 338 and 35 and 375 caliber cartridges over the years simply because they see with their own eyes that those heavier bullets properly placed destroy less meat, drop game with extreme relieablity, have all the power and range necessary and can be had in lighter guns that last longer and cost less, to shoot. a standard 338 win mag or 35 whelen will handle almost any shot your likely to get while really hunting with total ease! try shooting at a 6" paper plate from a sitting position at 300 yards with a 35 whelen then try with a new 300 rem ultra mag, now if both are sighted in at 200 yards youll find that the ultra mag (150grn) drops about 5.2" at 300 yards, has about 2290 ft lbs of energy left and the bullet is moveing about 2600 fps on impact or the same as a 300 savage at 50 yards
now its true the 35 whelens 250 grain bullet starts out about 1000fps slower but at that same 300 yards its dropped only about 5.87 inches more, hit your shoulder with alot milder wack, still has 1975 ft lbs of enegry,is still moveing at about 1900fps will shoot clean through the deer or elk and hit with more power and penatration than a 454 casull pistol fired at 1 foot distance,or that same 300 savage fired at about 100 yards, but with far better bullet weight and penetration (while destroying less meat, in a lighter rifle that costs less and does not burn out barrels nearly as fast! (and if you cant put 3 consecutive shots in a 6" paper plate from a sitting position with a good rifle and sling you should not be shooting that far at game anyway! you need to practice sitting and off-hand shots untill you can hit that 6" paper plate! (THERE ARE NO BENCH RESTS AVAILABLE WHILE ELK HUNTING)
what Im trying to get at here is that if youll pick a 35 whelen,338 win mag youll be much better equipted for elk hunting in most areas (and elk are shot mostly in timber at under 250 yards)than if you spend lots of money on a new super zapper which will be much better suited for use ### on deer , antelope and coyotes at over 400 yards plus, in open country than on elk in the timber where they are normally found!
