seems like i was able to get some kind of color representation of the area desired by following jesse's directions, but how do i get the actual view of an aerial photograph of my desired location?

I need more information. ###What software, webpage are you using? ###Is there a thread you read somewhere that you are trying something and can't get it to work?

the first time i tried i was able to describe the area much more precisely. ###i'm trying to get a aerial b/w photo of an area about 3 miles north of clintonville pa of a road called "phipps" road. ###the result was a color "map" representation of the area but then i couldn't really tell if it was my desired area or not.

question: ###is that all we get from the web? ###a color "map" representation, and once we're sure "that's it" do we order that map representation and get an actual b/w photo in the mail?

Since you in PA, like me, ###Penn State has a website that you can download aerials by USGS Quad name. ###it's at http://www.pasda.psu.edu/access/drg24klist.cgi

Just look up your quad name and download a tiff file for that area.

Let me know if that any use. ###You might also want to download ArcExplorer to use with the tiff file you downloaded. ###It makes it easier to pan and zoom but you can also use a graphics package. ### The link for download that is http://www.esri.com/software/arcexplorer/index.html

Let me know how you make out.

    todd,
does arcexplorer provide you with a black & white photo or a color map? ###

still trying to figure out how to pinpoint a specific area i want at the other website you provided.

Oops, ###my bust. ###Yeah, DOQQ. ###You might want to download the Sid images. ###They are compressed but the quality is good. ###Just makes for easier downloading.

i think what i've discovered so far is to follow this link:

    http://edc.usgs.gov/products/aerial/napp.html

click on the "Search & Order", then click on "Photofinder", search using the links, designate a 5x5 mile area, order a 9"x9" B/W photo. ###get the photo, choose the area i want enlarged,( use a template to do this as described from instructions from another link on that page), mail it back, they enlarge it and mail both back to me. ###my ultimate goal in this is to get a b/w photo of a specific plot of 20 acres of land.

Try this neat little software download. It's easier than the ArcExplorer. ###Go to http://jdmcox.com/ and download USAPhotoMaps. ###You enter in a Lat/long and it downloads the aerials from terraserver for you. ###You can zoom out/in, pan put waypoints on etc. ###A nice little package.

from a GPS or off a topo map. ###What county is the location you want? ###Is there a road major road intersection nearby? ###I can probably get you close then you can pan and zoom from there.

    Gone this afternoon, back tomorrow

Ok, I used 41 12 00 ###and 79 52 00 ###for the lat/long and it put just north of clintonville. ###Looks to be right in the area you are looking for. ###You may need to zoom out some till you see clintonville so you get your bearings.

    Good luck,
    Todd

Try lostoutdoors.com for aerial photos. Enter coordinates as dd* mm.mm' in WGS-84 map datum.
