My new GSP pup was born last Saturday. ###I am excited to get her. ###I had to put my 10 year old GSP down last summer and have felt the void ever since. ###I loved that dog. ###I am getting a female this time and really looking forward to working with her.
Congrats on your new pup.I am sorry about the death of your dog, why did you have to put your dog down. was it due to an illness? My friend is thinking about getting a GSP and he's researching if this breed has any illness that occurs frequently within this breed.
He was sick and started getting aggressive toward the kids and especially strangers. ###He snapped at our friends little girl and caught her on the cheek. ###It was very small puncture wound but drew blood nonetheless. ###I was thankful that it wasn't worse. ###Although I had put that dog first in my life for many years, I have to remember that human life and safety is more important than an a dog. ###It was a VERY difficult decision, and some might frown on it, but I felt it was my duty to make that decision. ###I thought it was in the family's best interest. I cried more over that than anything I could remember. ###Had a lot of good times and hunts with that dog. ###I am looking forward to many more with my new pup.
Once that pup is ready, we'll finally take our hike up in the hills. ###My Lab is now 10 weeks young. ###They can point on butterflies and chew rocks. ###Congrats.
I am getting her from a guy in Los Banos. ###His name is John Woodward. ###After hunting behind my dog for years, one of my buddies did some research got a GSP pup about a year and a half ago off of his partner Aaron. ###His dog has turned out to be a pretty good dog. ###Anyway, my pups parents are Cruz and Holly. SIRE:Unzippered(Cruz)-Son of Heidie's Mighty City Slicker. I can't find the Dams info right now. ###I will post somemore info about them when I remember where it is. ###She will be mostly white with some liver spots and a little ticking. ###A lot like the dog in the photo above.
Well we decided to pack up the whole family and go up to Los Banos to pick her up. ###There were 4 pups in the litter 2 male and 2 female. ###Through talking back and forth with the breeder he had mentioned over the phone that there was one pup in the litter that he personally thought was the best. He said it had a very distinguishing mark on it. ###He was going to let us pick whichever one we wanted. ###I wanted to get a female. ###When we arrived we all went to the back to see the pups. ###One of the pups had a heart shaped liver spot on her side and she was the one that immediately came up to the kids (4yr girl and 18 month boy) and wife. ###She had a solid brown head which I liked too. ###She was perfect. ###My daughter was so excited when I told that we were going to take her home with us. ###She held the dog for 4 1/2 of the 5 hour drive home. ###The first night she whined like a mule. ###The second night I think was a little better but I was too tired to notice. ###Just like having newborn baby I guess. ###We are all pretty excited to have her in the family. ###I am trying to get her crate trained. ###My friend recommended that I should do it but I have never done for any of my dogs before. ###Any recommendations?
Congratulations on the new pup!! She sounds beautiful!!
As I get up for the 30th time to take the "new baby" out to go see if she needs to go potty, I remember, at least it's not diapers!!! And she can walk on her own!
I have found that putting a wind up, tick tock type clock in her box/bed/kennel, really soothes a new pup. It helps them sleep a little more at night, which in turn helps keep your sanity.
For crate or kennel training, keep placing them in the crate when they start to look tired, feed them in the crate, take them for drives in the crate and then play with them. ###Make the crate a pleasant, safe place to be. ### Tell them "Kennel" whenever you put them in the crate. ### Give them a tidbit when they finally understand what the command "Kennel" means and they enter it willingly. ### Eventually, they will associate it with a trip to the park, or the field for a hunt as well as their bed. ### ###Don't use the crate, at least initially, as a punishment.
Remember to take them outside right away when you let them out of the kennel. ###(Keeping them in the kennel is a good way to housebreak them, too, since they don't want to mess in their bed.)
Rick/JDC,
Thanks for the tips. ###She is doing pretty good so far but I need to not let her drink before she goes in the crate at night. ###The last couple of nights she has "wet the bed." ###I was hoping to get through the night but 6 hours may have been a little long for her especially with a drink before going into the crate. ###Hopefully, her bladder with grow quickly.
