I don't know if this has ever been brought up in this forum before. I think it would be fun to see how folks think, so lets go for it.
In your opinion who was the greatest hand caller of all time. I'm not talking about hunting or howling, only hand calling.
You have many names to pick from like Murray Burnham, Jim Dougherty, Tom Mills, Byron South, Bowen Weems, A.L. Lindsey, Del Western, Randy Anderson, Major Boddicker, Lew Early, Winston Burnham, Bill Dudley and a bunch more. Pick one and give the reason you think he is the best of all time.
I don't think I've actually ever heard any of those guys call before except for R. Anderson, saw his video once. I think calling is subjective, everyone seems to have a different idea of what sounds good. I've hunted with people before who I thought their sounds wouldn't call nothing in, but it did. I personally think loud, gravelly, aggresive styles sound the best. As for the best caller, nobody famous, probably the guys I grew up around.
tawnoper, they have had predator calling contest for years, since the mid 50s. The judges in these contest were usually call makers or professional callers themselves.
They have had World and National contest along with many State contest over the years, Arizona still has a State contest every year, California stopped doing it maybe 6 or 8 years ago.
In these contest the judges tell the callers what they want to hear, examples realism, coaxing, volume and a two minute time limit. Like anything else you judge, there is always opinions. That's why they have more then one judge.
Every contest I ever entered, I felt the best caller won.
I can understand the younger guys not knowing about the oldtime callers, but they do have new guys on the seen nowadays and some of them are pretty good, so I hear lol.
I agree with ya tawnoper. I've read a lot about the Burnhams, and seen Randy A., and I think I recognize a couple of the others.
The Burnhams were ground breakers, and Randy A. has a lot of time to call and make those videos.
If I got funded like some of the people that make vidoes do so they don't have to work for a living, I and a bunch of people out there, could make videos just as good.
Calling doesn't realy matter unless you include knowing how and where to set up in the first place. Even Randy couldn't call up a coyote on some of our places without some knowledge of the area.
Just my 2cents worth

Hey Onecoyote, let me rephrase a bit... I do know what calling contests are, I've never been to one though so thanks for the rundown of how it works. All the guys you mentioned I have heard of, even have a couple old weems calls, I've just never personally "heard" any of them actually calling. I'd imagine they are all pretty good though.tawnoper, they have had predator calling contest for years, since the mid 50s. Yeah tawnoper, some of them guys were pretty good lol. I got to met Bowen Weems in Silver City NM at the predator callers hall of fame get together in 04.
Bowen and Wayne first produced calls in 1954. There calls won all places in the 1957 and 1959 Worlds Championship Varmint Calling Contest. Bowen himself won that contest in 1963.
tawnoper, what kind or make of Weems calls are they?
antlrcolectr, setting up your stand can be important, but not always depending on how you hunt. The most important thing when it comes to alot of action is location, location, location.
I hear Randy Anderson hunt's on his own ranch most times, I'd call that smart. You are also right by saying almost anybody can do it, as long as you can shoot most anyone can.
I've been playing this game longer then I want to admit, hunted contest hunts and competition calling before most people ever heard of it.
Now I just sit at home and type about it lol, that's a lie. As I'm sure you guys know, once it's in your blood it's there tell the end.

Hey onecoyote, both calls are dual tones. What's a shame is my dad had a whole bunch of calls (weems (wood & plastic), some old circe's and a bunch of other stuff ripped off back in the 70's. He was a member of CVCA in the early to late 60's so along with the calls his club jacket (the tan one with all the patch's) was taken too. Man, I'd sure like to have that stuff now.Yeah tawnoper, some of them guys were pretty good lol. I got to met Bowen Weems in Silver City NM at the predator callers hall of fame get together in 04.

I may have known your dad, what chapter was he in? I still have my old jacket with all the pins and patches. What a pitty having history taken from you, some of those old calls are worth money nowadays. I think you know I spent 25 years in the old CVCA, believe it or not it's still alive kinda.
HEY, NICE TO HEAR YOU GUYS TALK ABOUT THE CVCA, I ALSO WAS A MEMBER IN THE SIXTIES, PHILL GREENE, JIM PARKER, BILL HAYS, BOB INGLIS, WE WERE OUT OF ORANGE COUNTY CHAPTER, STILL IN THE BLOOD.
BEST HAND CALLER IS THE ONE THAT GETS THE DOG TO HEAL.
