I read a note on the Alaska group from "mefishme" that leads me to ask for some thought from you all....
I am taking my family on a canoe/camping trip in the middle of July....we will be on Chesuncook Lake and then travel the west branch of the Penobscot to make access to Moosehead Lake...eventually take out in Greenville...
I have not approached the guide group to understand what measures they take to protect their clients....but my thoughts run along the line of taking the matter into my own hands to be sure it is done.....
There are a number of questions that I have that I think Maine residents would have some ability to address....so please, I would greatly appreciate your input..
1.) What is known about the area mentioned?....I have a feeling that it is remote enough to easily present the potential of unwanted and dangerous predator moments....
2.) What are the typical defense preparations that a well known guide business typcially takes to protect the client and the business?.....I intend to ask the guide, but would like thoughts from the group here...
3.) What are the regulations in Maine for self defense carry in a circumstance such as this?..... I have a Pennsylvania CCW permit, but am aware that there is no reciprocity between the two states....
4.) What are they typical choices that any of you may have seen taken beyond the guides themselves to (clients) to assure the situation?.....my instinct is to belt holster my .357, but bear formulated pepper spray is also a choice....
Thanks for any input that you all might be able to provide.... :)
I have no idea about that area, but if I was going camping in remote areas now days, alone or with a guide, I would be packing heat if at all possible.
Just tell the guide your thoughts and see if it is okay to carry your handgun. I'm sure they get the question all the time.
When I was a kid I was told anyone could be president.... now I believe it.
If you are planning on going from Chesuncook to Moosehead Lake you will be going upstream on the West Branch. I was not sure you were aware of that. As far as protection I don't feel you will need it but if it makes you feel more comfortable then go ahead and get some pepper spray.
[size=7]That sure would be one heck of a paddle, wouldn't it.
I think Bill is right, bring some pepper spray and maybe an air horn.
Nothin to be too afraid of there.![]()
