Having worked in a Jail for over 12 years, it is amazing what treating an inmate like a human does for you. My dad who did 28 years on the dept, taught me a saying, "treat them like a man, and they will do anything for you."

64 year old Deputy....this is a good example of why LEO's are "allowed" to retire at 55. Here's a 64 year old Deputy that didn't have much of a chance against a 24 year old assailant. Lucky for him the other inmates took his side. Do you really want 64 year old LEO's fighting with street thugs? Do you really want 64 year old Firefighters combing through burning buildings looking for fire victims?

When my brother was a CO he was told several times by inmates that he had no worries if something went down, I'm sure that was because he treated them like men and didnt have a attitude like a lot of the other co's.

As for his age so what I'll tell you one thing I plan on still working fire when I'm 60 if im still capable and pass my physicals try and stop me

Thankfully, I don't work with many Psychopathic killers. But on another note, if you haven't worked in a jail environment (where the inmate to guard ratio is over 100 to 1), and it is your job is to get everyone to follow the rules, you are in for a rude awakening. The rules are simple "Ask, Tell, Make," You ask them to do something, and if they refuse, you tell them, then you make them. 99.9% of the time I ask them to do something and they comply.

I am not saying all criminals are murderers and understand your reasoning for treating them the way you do. I suppose this is why some people choose to be a LEO as oppose to a CO.
