I drew X7A with a couple friends after 4 years of trying. My friend has a cabin in Truckee which will be our base camp and he has done some scouting up by Independence Lake and seen one good buck. Anyone else have some pointers for the area? I know it has great potential. Last year had a 57% success rate with about one third split of forkies, three points and four points or better. I hope to hold out for something decent. Any advice is appreciated.

Go farther east of Independence Lake. I know a fire just ripped through the area, and I'm not too sure how much it burned, but you might want to try Antelope Valley. I've seen lots of deer around Prosser Lake. Personally, I would hunt the areas Northeast of Prosser Lake. Might want to look at Smithneck Canyon... lots of good area through there.

We are headed up this weekend to scout. Good luck to you guys on the 1st and 2nd.... That Independence area is beautiful country. Don't overlook the lake of the woods area, every year a few nice bucks come from that area.

Head past Bear Valley Camp ground and get on those ridges overlooking Loyalton in the morning. I have seen a ton of deer coming up to those ridges in the morning from the valleys around Loyalton. Almost any ridge will do...there are bucks all over those ridges...you just have to see them first. Also, bring your shotgun and drive around for quail during the day...keep your rifle close, we've gotten deer in the middle of the day looking for quail. Good Luck!

Just to add a little to what gwhunter69 had said... be careful hunting close to Loyalton. A lot of private property around there. Lots of deer, but good luck gaining access to some of the land. Great area though. I have an aunt that lives in Loyalton, so I frequent that area, and I've seen quite a few nice bucks around there. good luck!

Be careful on the quail, in my four scouting trips, including this weekend the majority of the quail, at least where I was were valley quail which is not open until the third Saturday in Oct.
