its a shooter
i bought a rem 30-06 mod 700 adl took it out of the box free floatded the barrel had a gunsmith cut of 1/2 inch of stock so it would fit me. went to the range shot 2 inch groups. but the last bullet would jam. rem sent me a new spring and folower. took the gun apart andthat fixed yhe jam problem but then the best groups i could get was 2 1/2 inches. tried four kinds of ammo all did the same but never had to adjust the scope to hit 2 inches high at 100 yards.still not happy with the groups. tried some fed fusion 165 gr shot 5 rounds inside a inch at 100 yards and was dead center 2 inchs high at 100 yards. its a real shooter when you can get that kind of groups with one kind of ammo and know that i can use other ammo and not change the impact point just dont get the great groups. right what is your thoughts on this

Cool, I recently bought a Remington 700 ADL in 7mm mag. Got it online from a Texas pawn shop as a back up Elk rifle for just over $200.00 . Turns out it was stuck in the back of a closet and never shot. It arrived with weaver bases and a synthetic stock and a little rusty. Cleaned it up put on a Boyds JRS stock, Timney trigger. BDL converson and a Nikon Monarch 2.5x10x42 scope. Oh, glass bedded the stock. 3 shots to sight in and a five shot group with 1 flyer just to the right of the first 4 with factory ammo. Quite happy and will start load development this week. So far very pleased with my back up beater.

You want advise, well I am full of it...haha pun intended. Get the trigger adjust down to 2 3/4 - 3 1/2 lbs, and your groups will shrink dramatically. Are you shooting off a sled or sand bags, blocks, rifle bipod, etc? A sled with shrink your groups as well, you arent really "shooting" your using tools to see how accurate the rifle/scope combo is. But it is a great measuring tool. I have a 700 bdl in 06, and with sand bags and by God given shoulder I can shoot 1 1/2 inch groups with federals, all day long. I think Remingtons just love that load. Also, different types of ammo shoot differently, which I know you know, but I mean that many manufactured lead core loads use slightly differnet copper % jackets with travel down the barrel differently. You tried a few ammo brands but if I were you over the next year before next season I would try at least that many more...Hornady, Winchesters, Nosler, Remington, Federals, Dakota, Norma, Cor-Bon...Just to name a few. But fusions are a good round, stick with them and save yourself a little money, if you want.

Here some more advice. Instead of trying every brand on the market and burning up hundreds of dollars on ammo. Spend that money on reloading equipment and supplies. Your groups will improve dramatically and in the last year and a half, I turned 7 factory rifles into sub-moa shooters. The only modification done was free floating the barrel and trigger work on 3.

Ditto what Fishspanker said. For the bigger cartridges you need to reload and quit throwing your money down range for medicore groups. Better off rolling your own; better groups and your not constrained from season to season by what ammo the local store has on the shelves.

i did a trigger job its set at 3 pounds i shoot off sand bags. i think 5 rounds inside a inch is a real good group. most of the guns i have shot i can find ammo that shoots good but when i try other ammo it shoots at a differnt impact point . i just thought it was good to get a good group from one and know that i can use other stuff without changing my scope. dont get the good groups but if i FORGOT my ammo i could get some rem or fed hi shock at any wall mart. i think i will buy a bunch of fed fusion. what do you all think of using 165 gr fusion on elk is it to light?

It's not the arrow, it's the Indian. Have confidence in your shot and where you can put and your .30-06 will take down an elephant with any grain loaded.
That said, you rifle needs to be sighted and practiced with the same loads you're going to use in the field. No sense in running out of the high dollar fusions only to buy some core lokt's at Wally world and not have any clue where they're going to be in a pinch.
I have been lookin at getting into reloading myself, but it's a lot of dough to invest when my buddies FFL will get me Remington corelokts for next to nothing because I don't have to pay a mark up. But again, we have to weigh out the pros verus the cons. Spend the scratch on reloading equipment to have loads that you know will touch each other? Or, save said scratch and practice and have confidence in yourself that you will put the bullet where it needs to be.
Lotsa options. Your group looks pretty good.
What I do when sighting in is slap on a bipod on the front sling swivel. Rest the butt of the gun on sandbags where it's absolutely on the bullseye. Snuggle up to the Boomstick and squeeze. Check it and adjust.
Good luck.

180gr would be a better choice for elk.

Catchdog,
You do know that no matter how accurate your ammo is it will always come down to the shooter. Most average shooters never realize the importance of consistantcy when it comes down to shooting.
An example would be: The amount of pressure on the rifle either on the shoulder and/or hand will cause the bullet path to change from shot to shot.
So always remember to do everything the same everytime.
Also, a bedding job is a must. You might get lucky and shoot a nice group here and there but your action is moving/shifting like crazy. In other words, you may think you are aiming at the same place for 5 shots but in reality you're not. So bed that action!

mr luckypants thank you once i get my rifle sight in and picked out the ammo im going to us i get off bench and shoot from my knees, off my pack, from my sticks, from the side of a tree. everything that might come up in the field . i want the most accurate hunting load i can get but i do understand that it comes down to the shooter thats why i get of the bench and shoot like i would in the field. my consistantcy is to shoot from all the ways i do in the field as much as i can .
