I just bought a new gun from a guy at work (he got broke and i wore him down) it is a Savage model 110 in the 270 caliber bolt action, synthetic stock.

I got this gun for $250.00 i think he said he paid almost $400.00 after tax last year, it came with Scope, Hardcase, sling and trigger lock.

Did i get a good deal or what, he never shot a box through it.

Steve, what model Remington is it. I got an old 30-06 Remington 720 R as a gift a couple years ago. I put a lyman peep and its real accurate for an ironsight with a 20" barrel. It was made from the P17 action and all the variants combined totaled around 2500 manufactured between 1941-42.

They did an article on it in american rifleman may 2001.

Brian, its a 03-A3 made between 1941-1944.I do enjoy the peep sites and they are accurate I've just debated myself for along time wither to update it with a scope or keep it like it was given to me.
######Would be interesting to track down its history because of the time it was mfg. ###### ###### ###### ###### steve

Has to be Rem model 760 .270WIN

I also have the same gun in .243WIN that shoots extremely well. The .243 was my first gun I bought when i was 14 yrs old (about 20 yrs ago). I saved my money from working on a local farm over the summer so it has other value as well. I bought it used for $90! but i don't think it was ever shot much.

I have a 7MM Weatherby and a Savage 110 in .243, but my favorite is my first hunting rifle - a Win Mod 94 30/30 with a Tasco 4x Wide Angle Scope. After cleaning way too much blood-shot mess off my last 3 bucks I realized the Mag was not made for D zone deer. I have killed 10 bucks and 4 coyotes in zone D5 over the last 20 years have never shot more than 70 yards. Having an easy to handle, light kicking, pointable gun with quick follow-up capabilities makes me feel more comfortable now that I am mature enough to know how to be patient and put the cross hairs where they need to be before I squeeze. Of course if I can ever get drawn for that X-zone or finally make that out of state trip you bet that Mag will be moving back to the front of the line!

My Ruger M77 30.06 with a Burris 3-9 scope. I got this rifle from my dad when I was 16 and have used it for Deer, Elk, and antelope. It's a good shooter. There might be better rifles on the market for hunting but I think I will use this one forever.

Mine is a Remington 742 in 30.06 with a 3x9 Redfield. I started hunting with a borrowed one and really liked the feel of it. When I had to return the borrowed rifle, I went out and bought one just like it.

BAR .308 given as a Bday gift from my Dad in 1988. I've used this exclusively. Scope is a new Leupold matte finish 3 x 9. The rifle was so shiny that back in 1989 I taped it. For this hunting season i painted it camo ala Varmit Al style. Looks trick!

For local hunting my favorite is my Remington 700 stainless mountain rifle in 30-06. It is light, I can carry it all day, and it is very accurate with the Federal 165 BTSP. I have taken several deer and wild boar with it and have always been pleased.

MY RIFLE.... My coyote and deer rifle is a 40 year old Sako Forester action with a new Shilen stainless steel barrel chambered for a "tight neck" 243 Win. I got it from Herters' as a barreled action for $75 mail order. The stock was a semi-finished club of French walnut with a fair amount of fiddle back grain for $15. It was my first stock job and I wore out the stock screws taking it apart and putting it back together while inletting it. Then, I did a stupid thing. I checkered it! It took a month and a whole new vocabulary of working words! While I was doing it and had it all messed up, I swore an oath to myself that I would never checker another stock and I have kept the promise. Finally I glass bedded it. The barrel is free floating with a generous gap from about 2 inches forward of the action. I gave up trying to make a "tight" clearance. It seemed like I couldn't slide a dollar bill down the barrel after a few months, so I made the clearance at least 0.05 inches.

CAMO MAKES IT PRETTY.... About 12 years ago, I painted the whole thing camo. It looks very dull and there is no shine off the barrel. In about a year or so, the paint wears down and gets shiny in some areas and then I repaint it. The rifle has about 5 or 6 camo coats on it now and the nice pretty fiddle back wood is down in there somewhere.

TASCO TR SCOPE.... The scope is a Tasco TR 4X-16X with a Trajectory/Rangefinder reticule. RedHead (BassPro) still sells it for $160. The glass is only OK, but the range finder is what makes it my choice! It is a very simple system and works very well. Tasco gives you 5 rings that go on the vertical adjustment knob. Each ring has yardage readings out to 500 or 300 yards in 50 yard increments. They tell you which ring to use for each rifle, but I went one better than that. I wrote a small BASIC program that takes the bullet and velocity that I use and calculates a least square fit to the drop numbers in the Sierra Reloading Manual. I then have a third order polynomial equation for the drop out to 1000 yards. No, I don't shoot that far, but numbers are cheap! Setting zero at 100 yards and using the height of the scope over the bore, the program calculates the number of clicks below the line-of-sight for each range past 100 yards. I counted the yardage clicks on each ring and selected the ring that best fits my calculation. I have a ring that is calibrated within ±1 click, of the true drop setting, all the way out to 500 yards for the .243 100 gr. Spitzer at a muzzle velocity of 2900 fps.

Note: The paint job is wearing out and it is ready for a new coat of paint...

Hey Hook I like your rifle. How's the kick at the bench and what does your rifle weigh fully set up? Also Sidekick how many rounds do you have in your rifle? If your throat ever gets worn out would you ever be interested in the Ackley Improved round? Had a good article in Accurate Rifle about five months ago.

The one I usually end up grabbing is a Win. classic in .308 with 2.5 x 8 Leupold. I wanted this gun in 7mm-08 but could not find one in my area. Now Ive grown rather fond of it and glad I got the .308.

Glad to see you on board Varmint Al, I got a lot of useful information off your sight over the years..Thanks

Hey Yotegetter how is that 30-30 on wild pigs? What bullet or load do you use? I've got a Winchester 94 that I have thought about using on pigs in the brush.Got a Marlin 1895 which would probably be better for close in pigs, but I thought it would be neat to take a 30-30 once.

Bou, Sorry I missed your post, but to answer your question, it kicks a bit on the bench but I dont feel it at all in the field. Like I said it holds real good groups too.

I havent weighted the rifle so I am guessing 7.5 lbs. with a Leupold 3.5-10x40.

My favorite for carrying is a pre-64 Model 70 Featherweight in .243, topped with a Redfield 3X9. I use it mostly for coyotes. Have shot a couple of pigs with it but in my opinion a heavrier bullet is needed. When it's meat time I go for my Remington 721 30.06 with a Burris 3X9 compact. I've had both of these for over 30 years.

Good old Rem Mdl 700Adl in 30-06 with a composite stock, harris bi-pod, and a leupold 3x9, had it for 20 years now and it's never failed me.

Although I do have a Savage 110 in 25-06 with same bi-pod, stock, and scope as above that might be moving into 1st place.
