I saw many coyotes the last two weekend of duck season. I hunt a club right across the highway from wister. I heard coyotes every night I was out there this last fall. I will be in AZ hunting javelina. Otherwise I would join you guys and show you around. We had at least 5-10 coyotes running around each night. And saw fresh bobcat track multiple times this season. We had a member shoot a coyote from camp a month ago. I have walked out of my trailer only to have a coyote less than 10yds away before. Watch out for the dogs out there. there are a couple packs roaming around. They are pretty much wild and do what you think is best if come upon them. none have collars. They tore up our club multiple times. a pack of wild dogs is an uneasy feeling while out there alone at night. This is the first year we always had a gun close by.
All the DWU fields are open to the public. At first light you can set up on these. the ones along gilespie and english roads have coyotes around them. the coyotes seem to use the drainage canals as corridors. I have had many insances of coyotes walking along the Z drain. I saw two coyotes 3 weeks ago heading into wister along the Z drain from our property. To bad they were out of range of the 3.5" goose load I had in. I am pretty sure night hunting is legal out there. Setting up at night could produce good results. Just make sure you have guys watching in all directions. We have put in a call around the fire for fun before and in no time had coyotes less than 50yds from the fire even.
Good luck and report how it goes. Less coyotes out there will help with the pheasants, quail, rabbits, ducks and everything else. Now if there was a way to control the hawks. the pheasants DWU plants might actually survive till hunting season.

Although my buddy "Westy" gives me a hard time about this, IMO, Wild dogs are a MUCH bigger problem than Coyotes and they MUST ALL be dispatched. They’re excellent table fare for the wild (unlike Coyotes) and you help the environment by eliminating these pests… and it feels good to help the wild… even if “Westy” calls you a “Dog Killer”.

From La Verne, head east on the 210 to the 215 South. Turn east on the 10 and head out to Indio. Just past Indio, go south on the 86S Expressway. As you approach Mecca, you can see the large bio-fuel power plant. Turn left at the mega-AM/PM store onto 66th. Cross over to old-111 and head south to Wister.
The parking lot is dirt. Permits? I don't think so. Open, non-posted land and DWU fields are close by.

There are many open areas to hunt. the open land past the farm fields are open also. Just make sure you don't enter the military land. There are plenty of signs. Don't want your truck to used for target practice. But does make form some good shows. Especially at night with the tracers and explosions in the mountains
If you need anything Niland is only a couple miles away. Don's bar is a good spot for food and a cold beer. And for adventure, take a trip out to slab city and salvation mountain. I guess the heat makes people a little wacky out there.
This time of year is good for seeing other wildlife at wister too. You will easily see thousands of ducks and geese. there are even flamingos out there. Your chances of seeing coyotes is good.
Pitdog - thanks for the thoughts on the dogs. coyotes are scared of me and run off. The dogs don't and it is not a good feeling when there are 4-5 dogs around and your shotgun only holds three rounds.
There are no permits for camping at wister. Though officailly, there is a day fee unless you posess a federal duck stamp. I don't know of anyone that has ever been checked though. I do ask birdwatchers and haven't found one that paid he day use fee. The anti hunting ones I give a hard time too when they don't pay the fee. guess they don't know that duck hunters pay for the refuge land with the duck stamp program.

Bow fishing for carp I take it? I guess you can call that varmint hunt in the water. Just don’t shoot any grass carp.

Dang Cary....did you leave any coyotes for us?
I'll bring my bow down. I haven't used it on fish yet, so don't laugh too hard.

I'm planning on joining if I can find you all. I'm going to bring my rifle, but I am a rookie when it comes to coyotes. But I'm also bringing my bow, and this I've done many times. Hopefully I'll be able to find you all and find a place to rest my head throughout the weekend.

I’m hoping to make it. My wife’s friend is being induced on Friday if she has the kid on Friday AM I will be there Friday PM, If she has the baby on Friday Pm I will be there on Saturday AM. If no kid on Friday then I may not make it. I will have to watch my son while my wife is at the hospital. Now this all won’t matter if I don’t get the fuel pump replaced in the Blazer.
Unless someone want to pick me up on there way out and we can just wait at my house to till my wife come to get my son….LOL J/k

I was planning to go rain or shine, but the navy has said otherwise. Was told last night that I'm going to be underway from Thursday until the end of the month. I was looking so forward to this trip, but I guess I'll have to try and make the next one. I hope everyone the best of luck, and PLEASE have a cold one for me.

I'll be out there Saturday (midday). I've got to do some testing Sunday, but will be around awhile on Sunday before I scoot down to meet AMMOe at the range...

Got back yesterday. Rained till about 10 Friday night, then it cleared out. Saturday was an awesome day. Only 3 diehards showed up...myself, BrianS, and Wildbirdhunter. No coyotes were killed, but the first JHO Wister bobcat was. I'll let the slayer tell the story when he checks in. MarinePMI also showed up Saturday afternoon. Everyone that couldn't make it missed a great time.
