Yeah, the Apple Valley gun club lol. Man, 700 acres is nothing, maybe we could all camp out there though? We have so much BLM and National Forest land to hunt, you could hunt forever and never get to it all. I Had a guide service and a predator hunting school out here, I know where to go and would be glad to show guys where to go for what ever they wanted to hunt, cats , coyotes, fox etc. I'd kinda like to get a thing going for next year. A weekend campout with some friendly competitions, like shooting or maybe who can bring back the most jacks, something to make it fun. Sit around a camp fire at night and tell big lies lol.

onecoyote, We might be able to stay at my cuz's place. There is some nut case who has planted himself on the property and he has to remove him, I told him that a group of us could take care it (LOL). He said he would let me know.
If we can't we can still get together out your way, is there a place you know to hunt some Chucker and put up a camp fire for an over nighter.

Well...it looks like the majority are wanting to go Jan. 3-4, so lets go with it. If the date sticks I'll probably be out there on the afternoon of the 2nd and stay till???

So it looks like the weekend of Jan 3&4 at Carrizo.
Great spot. You can hunt rabbits, squirrels, quail, chuker, coyote, bobcat, pigs (a few).
Let see who's going.

darn it, Bishop, I'm having a heck of a time trying to get away over the next couple of weeks. I'm busier than a man outa be lately and should be illegal.
Doesn't look good for me right now, but I sure would like to make it out there for at least a Sat morning hunt and stop by etc.
So don't count me in, but I'm gonna try. Also, if I read the posts right I think QALHNTR was planning on making it. Not sure though?!

I've been looking for a good excuse to go play in the dirt.
If I make it, there is a good chance I'll head out on the first, I always like to get out hunting on New Years Day, usually a lot less people out. Anybody else up for making it out there on Thursday, or gonna be watching football instead?
I'm gonna try to talk my best friend into heading out there with me. He doesn't know it yet :big grin santa hat: , but he's getting his first rifle for Christmas, he needs to try it out.
Anybody gonna try to go after pigs on this trip? Maybe that would be a good plan for the Thursday and/or Friday.
Whiskey and cigars around the campfire in Carrizo , sounds like a perfect evening to me.
I'll bring one of those washtub fire rings, maybe we should set up a separate little campfire for the young'ns, away from the bad influence of some of you characters.

Were still 2 weeks out, so it is likely to change some, but here is the weather forecast for 01/02/04 for the general area.
At New Cuyama, Ca. Snow, ice and rain possible, high 43*, low 10*.
At Taft / Maricopa, rain and ice possible, high 45*, low 28*

JBarn3,
Why that weather is on the warm side for a Wisconsin deer opener.
I remember an old pig hunt with Nesson Schmidt. It was in the low 40's at night and he offered to bring in some firewood for us. We got back from hunting and there was about four truck loads of wood. He poured some diesel around the edge and lit it up. He said he wanted a fire big enough for the folks in San Luis Obispo to see. And was it ever. Heck, we had to move the trucks back it was so hot. Ah, the memories.
I'm doing my best to get a few days off - bringing the kids if I make it.

The cold I can live with. According to several threads last year, the Carrizo turns into the Gumbo Swamp after rain. With two storms lined up is anyone still planning on going out?
If not, I might hit Jesse up for those Ducks tix

I was thinking to myself today I better post again and make sure everyone was planning on camping at KCL campground. However, as Qalhntr points out the storms are a brewing. What's everyones plans??? Still hunting?

If it does rain before, say a day before then I would have to say no body would be going. The mud would be nasty, and I don't have a 4X4 yet.(on order). We'll just have to see how the wheather plays out

I just now checked the Weather Channel (on internet) and it gave the following forecast:
Friday, 01/02... 30% chance of a few showers...
Saturday, 01/03... 10% chance and partly cloudy....
I forgot about Sunday, but if I remember correctly I did not see anything about the threat of rain for that day.
G-R-E-A-T conditions for a hunt (& most folks staying at home too). The roads are definitely a concern however especially without 4 wheel drive.
It's not looking good for me, but if I can sneak away for a Saturday morning hunt and stop in at KCL, I certainly will. We'll see?!
Happy Hunting All
Frank

I've got to go on the "maybe" list due to the fact my 4x4 is crapping out and my wife's 2 wheel drive likes to get stuck even on dry ground. If things stay dry, I'll be there at least for a day.

Well todays weather report is still saying rain Friday: http://weather.yahoo.com/forecast/USCA0668_f.html
With 20 miles of dirt road to the campground, I don't think it's going to work out. That place just isn't vehicle friendly when it rains.

As I am reading the thread I guess it is safe to say that no one is going to go for the entire weekend, if at all. ???

I'm still a "maybe" depending on how much rain falls. Probably better start looking at another date to do this hunt though.

Well, the wifey-poo started heaving this morning ( I was hoping it was too much champagne ). This evening the boy started up too. I'm going to have to pass and take care of the two....
....that way my daughter & I can still head out to the Family hunt at Rancho Jamul in good conscience
Good luck to whoever makes it out!

Well being that I hate not going I have to NO GO for me, with no 4X4 I wont even try to drive out there and the fact that it is raining right now. Well back to date board so we can pick another date and make this happen. My son is kickin me, he wants to go so bad. So should we try the end of the month so everyone can get those honey due lists out of the way.

Hate to spoil the party but just got back from Carrizo about 2 hours ago... It was a total rain out. Left @ 5am for a short day of quail hunting and we turned around @ Elkhorn Rd. There was standing water leading up to Maricopa and it was still raining throughout the morning. Boy what a long drive for nothing.... I hope this may save someone here who might have gone.Sorry.

Somewhere around the end of the month is probably a good idea Thonz. I just noticed more rain is predcited towards the end of next week too.
Thanks for the update DOC, and sorry to hear you rained out like that. Hey, sure makes us appreciate the good days though, right?! Don't think I'd wanta be there even with a 4x4 on Saturday.
Film at 11:00 I reckon
