Do I win a prize? Is it bacon?

How about a haiku?

Tejon has wild pigs
They're large, and round, and tasty.
The way I like 'em.

Excellent so far... How bout this

My rifle is clean and ready
my bullets hit right on the mark
Id just as soon shoot a smaller pig
If it's gonna be right before dark.
the canyons at tejon are wicked
their steep and they cause me great pain
when I find myself at the bottom of one
I wounder if I am insane
But go I will and go I must
and shoot a pig I hope
If there is one thing I've learned through it all
You've got to bring plenty of rope...

T-minus one week and I'm counting
for revenge on the big boar i'm mounting
an ambush attack from high above
my Core-Lokt .306 gonna give that tusker some luv

Last year he had Kenny and I climbing
up and down 6 ridges we went sliding
got to within 225 yards and he didn't know it
tried to take a good shot at him as to not blow it

With the sun in my scope, I had to say nope
and figured I'd close another 100 yards on this big dope
As we got close he tucked behind a tree
we moved closer to him so we could see

From the east a coyote yelped
and of course the wind didn't help
within a blink of an eye there was no more big guy
and the coyote continued to laugh as we cried...

Hopefully I'll improve as the day gets nearer.

Question!! Is there a road or dirt track that goes along Tunis Cr. I'm looking at my maps and since the Boundry is in black and it runs down the creek, I can't tell if there is a road or not. Thanks....hronk

Bob, my BLM map says yes. I believe I've been out that way, but wouldn't swear to it. Email me if you have any questions.

Bob, are you driving the big truck again? There's some skinny roads down there.

I tried to get down there in my big-ass Furd F-250 a few years ago, and I had to back out.

Hronk might be on to something. Weather report sez it might be muy caliente. Steep and deep might be the ticket to a full freezer.

Hey Hronk,
Seems like the hronkmobile has a pig magnet in the front anyway...all you have to do is drive the main roads. Heck, I may even follow you around!

Bring the .22 shorts, by the way. Shouldn't be too much wind, so you ought to be good out to about 400 or 500 yards with a good lob.

Hey Guys - I could really use some help. I've never been to Tejon before, and heck, I hardly know anything about the place other than the office is right off of I5. Anything I should know about finding the office Friday morning where we should meet? What USGS topo's cover the area? What BLM map covers the area? It's probably too late to pick up the BLM map, but I have USGS maps on a CD at work and should be able to print some out. Anybody have a pdf of a Tejon map that can be emailed? I'd greatly appreciate it.

Cheers,
Bodega

Bodega,

I can't recall where I stowed it, but I know someone posted up the USGS grid for maps. That's your best bet for mapping. If you find Lebec on your map, that's where you can start from, and is close to the middle of the eastern boundary (along I-5). From there, just look west.

There's also a map being passed around here on JHO, although it's really not that great, but gives you some general layout of the property. The ranch will have some maps for sale when we arrive. Can't remember how much they are, but not too bad.

Bodega, most of the ranch is on the Lancaster BLM map. There's also some on the Tehachapi map.

Reminder to be careful on some of those roads (reposted from another forum):

QUOTE
Quote:
talked to my friend whose brother was hurt. The brother and three others were hunting Tejon Ranch. Going up a steep hill in the Jeep, something popped and it started rolling backwards. It flipped and brother, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown out. The roll bar caught him on the chest and head. No internal injuries. Most was to his head. He lost an ear which could not be replaced. It is not life-threatening but he will have to undergo a lot of cosmetic surgery.[/b]
I often pull off my seat-belt when I am on some of the Tejon roads (I hate it cinching up on me while I'm trying to drive), but this will definitely be a reminder to keep it snapped while running around some of those roads.

Make sure you keep a full tank of gas while on Tejon. We got 2 fires burning near Tejon, one south along 138 and one up north on the 5. If the winds pick up they could be a problem this week. We still have assets out on Catalina Island mopping that mess up so L.A. Co is a bit thin right now for firefighting. You might have to make a break for it out the back side depending what the fires do.

Make sure you bring a FRS radio to keep in touch too.

What am the FRS call channel for this hunt? For help?

Mmm, hunting in the woodsmoke... yay!

Great reminder, Eric. Take it easy on those roads. This time of year, the biggest problem will be the steeper climbs, but even those can get you if you're not prepared.

Not sure the radio channel yet... probably CH5/Code5... if anyone doesn't have the sub-channels on their radio, we can switch to 5/0.

If there is anyone who can't make it to the ranch office by 10:30 Friday morning, PLEASE contact me ASAP so we can make arrangements to get you in. If we're waiting on someone to show up, it'll hold up the whole party.

Just checked accuweather website for Lebec its now calling for highs of 72-73 with lows around 51 for fri/sun. Thats about a 15/20 degree drop from previous entrys. Can"t wait, things are looking up... wind though will be about 13 with gusts to 23.

It would be good to have one of your own, Bodega. Sometimes there's one or two spares running around, but a decent radio is worth the ducats if you can swing it.

It was raining lightly here when I for work this morning. We may have an onshore flow which means fog up there.

The lower temps are welcome anytime

Saturday night at supper around 9pm will do a quick free raffle for some goodies, bino harnesses, hydropack, pig calls, camo hats etc.. The biggie this year is a skull done for the winner by Scott at High Desert Skull Works http://www.hdskullworks.com/

Free t-shirt from Eric at Hi-Way 395 Gear http://www.hiway395.com

Any other companies or guides/ranches that want to donate an item for the raffle please let us know.

Be there.

Point Forecast: Rural Kern County Mountains, CA
34.95N -118.71W (Elev. 3995 ft)

A WARMING TREND IS LIKELY DURING THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS
AS AN UPPER LEVEL RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE NOSES EASTWARD
FROM THE PACIFIC AND A SURFACE THERMAL TROUGH SETS UP
NEAR THE CA COAST. MARINE AIR MAY TAKE ANOTHER 36 HRS TO
COMPLETELY MIX OUT OF THE SJ VALLEY. BY WEDNESDAY AFTN...
HOWEVER...TEMPS IN MOST SJ VALLEY LOCATIONS...IN ADDITION
TO THE FOOTHILLS AND DESERT...WILL TICKLE THE 90-DEGREE
MARK.

WEDNESDAY APPEARS AS THOUGH IT WILL BE THE WARMEST DAY
OF THE NEXT 7 DAYS. THIS IS A CONTRADICTION TO EARLIER
RUNS OF THE MODELS WHICH SHOWED AN UNRELENTING WARMUP
THRU THE WEEKEND. INSTEAD OF BUILDING THE UPPER LEVEL
RIDGE EASTWARD INTO CA LATER THIS WEEK...THE MODELS INSIST
ON KEEPING THIS RIDGE CENTERED WEST OF 140W. THIS WILL
ALLOW ROOM FOR SHORT WAVES TO DIVE SOUTHEASTWARD FROM THE
GULF OF ALASKA TO THE GREAT BASIN AND BRING REINFORCING
PUSHES OF MARINE AIR TO THE SJ VLY. CONSEQUENTLY...VALLEY
TEMPS WILL BE CLOSER TO SEASONABLE LEVELS IN THE 4 TO 7
DAY PERIOD RATHER THAN MUCH ABOVE NORMAL. ADDITIONALLY...
THE MODELS FORECAST 850 MB TEMPS TO REMAIN BETWEEN 15-19
CELSIUS FROM THURSDAY THROUGH THE WEEKEND...WITH PERHAPS
FURTHER COOLING MONDAY. MAX AND MIN TEMPS WERE LOWERED
ACCORDINGLY DURING THIS PERIOD.

Anyone hear how the hunt went down there this last weekend?....hronk[/b]
MJB posted up in the Hog forum...sounds like 17 hogs by end of day on Saturday for the South side. Apparently three or four of those were his group (no surprise).

I sure do like the though of low to mid 70s for our hunt, but fellas...don't forget to plan for all kinds of stuff. You never know what you'll get up there.

Me, I'm bringing the parka and mukluks.
