Default Was I wrong to shoot this hog

Here's the story. Saturday morning I got a call from my friend Jim who said his cousin (my other friend) Craig shot a pig on public land with his .45 but needed help finding it because it ran into some brush. Jim said we could hunt and maybe see other pigs while we looked so we drove up and 3 hours later we start looking for his pig. After 20 minutes we saw no sign of his pig, but we spotted another herd. We didn't have our rifles, only pistols since we were just figuring on trying to find his pig.
We went back to the truck and I asked Craig how many guns we should bring. He said 2, that he and I could shoot and Jim elected not to bring a gun. We go back and the pigs moved some. I spot them and put my crosshairs on one, but Craig can't find them in his scope since they're behind trees and hard to see. After about 5 minutes they move into brush. This happens about 5 times where I spot them, get my scope on them and each time Craig has a hard time finding them. Finally we see them crossing the path ahead of us and I run up and tell Craig to hurry up. It looks like they are going to bolt so I ask Craig if I should shoot. He says, "No, wait. You got your bear and I want my pig," referring to a bear that I shot the previous weekend that he wasn't around for because he didn't want to come down, but he basically thought since I shot an animal last it was his turn.
The pigs stopped and I put my crosshairs on them. Craig said he didn't feel like doing a countdown because he wouldn't be able to coordinate and concentrate on shooting so I told him to shoot first and I'd shoot afterward. He shot and a second later I shot. My pig dropped; his pig took off. We tried to get another shot off, but they were running fast.
After dragging and loading my pig in the truck Jim told me that Craig was upset that he missed twice then later told me that Craig said he was done hunting with me because I was selfish to take the shot and felt he missed because I was pressuring him and crowding his shot.
Am I crazy or what? I bent over backward to make sure he had first shot. Is my perspective off or does he just need to grow up?
Tell me what you think.

We need to know more about what agreement you and Craig had together. My initial inclination is that Craig needs to spend more time on the range and in the brush, but if you had a prior agreement (at least in Craig's opinion) then things might be different. Did Craig think he was supposed to be the primary hunter?

I don't see where he should be complaining when you gave him first shot.

It was never discussed. He is the one who told me to bring my gun so we could both shoot.

Sounds like you did what you should have done. Craig needs range time.

Sounds to me like you need to look for a new hunting partner. A good one would have been happy for you. Sounds to me like he had two chances and blew them both.

He blew it. There was no prior agreement on who shoots, and you still gave him 1st shot and he missed anyways. I dont know craig or his side of the story, but your story makes him sound like a whiner.

Sounds like a different hunting partner is in order. It's not like you pushed him out of the way to get a shot at "his" pig. I'd be honored to hunt with somebody who passes on a number of shots to help his buddy get one.

My take on it is you need a new adult hunting partner with an ability to communicate.

Lose the dude. You need someone that is on the same page as you. Simpatico. When you find someone like that it is outstanding. I've been lucky with a couple of people over the years that we get along with. I wouldn't hunt with him EVER again.

Who cares what Craig thinks, big girl should be shopping for blouses rather than hunting if he can't handle a bit of disappointment

Yes Craig needs to grow up and put his purse down. I would have chosen "the gals on the View should have the final call" had it been an option.

Like others have mentioned, I don't know the whole story here. Speaking for myself, my circle of hunting buddies are real close. More like the three muskateers. All for one, one for all. If anybody from our group tags, we all win. The only thing that should matter when hunting with friends is "who has the cleanest shot". The unwritten rule is whoever sees it first gets the first shot. After that, it's every man for himself. Whether its me, my brother, or father-n-law; which ever guy drops the animal, they are getting congradulated with high fives and chest bumps. I know it sounds corny, but that's how we do it. It sounds like to me like you are looking for hunting partners who feel like it's a team effort, and not about being selfish. Good luck on what ever you decide. Tough call.........Remember, jelously has no business with friends, family, and hunting buddies.

Amen, group effort

If it were me and my friend? I would give him a front leg and tell him to buck up and get the sand out of his panties.

I offered him some or even most of the meat, but he said he didn't care about the meat, and he stalked off.

What a wuss. Sounds like a girly-man to me. He didn't care about the meat? Uh, see ya! I get more excited when my buddies kill something. Sounds like you are the same kinda guy. You tried everything to get that guy on a hog. Find a new buddy.

Craig has a very self-serving attitude and..............as an immature person that he is..............it will not be the first and it will not be the last that he will show his immaturity. It is best to avoid such people where you will always be walking on eggshells...........it is like walking on pins and needles. You don't need the aggravation..............especially since hunting is a RECREATION and NOT A JOB that gives you a paycheck and livelihood. On the job, I could put up with ornery people.......but in hunting, especially since the primary purpose is to relax and let loose and just enjoy your free time in the outdoors.............you don't need the complications of emotionalism and childish mindset.

I lol each time I read this. craig needs to get a grip and practice. you probably need another partner. I had an experience like yours long time ago when LS was a draw hunt we drew the shot gun hunt and I borrowed one that was better than mine but didn't practice enough. found some hogs 60 yrd shot shoulder to shoulder, I said you first and at the sound I'll go, he hits, I miss, we track his find it, pack it out (together) high fiven and all that, public pig success everyone is happy and shares the thrill of the hunt. it's not just who kills.
