I have a Garmin GPS III+ and I would highly recommend this model to any one. I use Mapsource Roads and Recreation. I am interested in the Garmin Rhino 120 GPS / radio combo.

I got a Magellen Meridian Gold for Christmas from my wife. I came with two software packages. One for street maping anywhere in the world (Mapsend, something)and another Mapsend package with topo information for the U.S. It also came with the computer and 12v power (cigarette lighter) cable combo, 2- 32 meg memory cards, batteries and a very sturdy mount that attached to the windshield with suction cups.

We just got back from a trip from SoCal to New Mexico. It worked great. I didn't realize what I was missing without one of these things.

She said she got it at Costco for $299. When I looked on line this same package was selling for $499.

Anybody that is interested should check out Costco.

I'm still using my Magellan ColorTrak that I purchased over 6 years ago. It has served my needs quite well, especially with the 30 hrs of battery life. At the time I purchased it, it was "top-of-the-line", but like computers it didn't take long to be "out-dated", especially by the new mapping technology. If & when I ever upgrade, I think I'd go with Magellan again with something like the Magellan SportTrak Pro. I would definately look at all the GPS that were available at the time I'm looking though, so I can get the one that gives me the best features for the $$$.

Had my Garmin Etrex Legend for about a year now. Glad I bought it, and would do the same again. Nice little unit. It does everything I need it to. I like using it in conjunction with EasyGPS and USAPhotomaps. Never did buy any of the map S/W to download maps to the unit tho.

i have a garmin gps12 i like the fetures it has especially that it draws a trial were you have been. i find this feature my favorte. i had a maglin gps and it did not have this feature. the magellin picked up stalights faster. the only thing i dont like about the garmin 12 is it takes a while to pick up satalight sometimes and you get te poor coverage message in heavy cover on cloudy days

I got the Magellan Sportrak, the basic yellow model. So far it's been great, works in the car, works in the woods & even down in the canyons. I still need to get software for it but since we only use it for Geocaching the roads won't help much anyway. We did get the lighter adapter for it since we tend to keep it on while driving in the basic direction of the cache & it will eat batteries over time especially with the screen backlit. Someone mentioned costco just thought I'd add we saw the sportrack map there with software, case & computer adapter forr $199 if anyone is interested.

My hunting buddy and I picked up a pair of Garmin Rino's this last season. We also got the topo map software to download onto the units.

I love the fact that it's a radio and gps in one and you can track each others location. I plan on getting another one for my son (15) so that we can hunt in the same area, put a little distance between us, and I won't loose him. (his mother would be pissed if I lost him)

I have the Garmin etrex. The basic yellow and I love it. I use it for fishing and hunting and the unit is a mule and accurate as "my shooting". For $80 brand new from Sportmart, I have not downloaded maps into it yet, but for now it get the job well done.

I started out buying a new GPS 40 several years ago, when that was the best hand held Garmin offered for the Hiker/Hunter.

Eventually it failed, and I bought a GPS 12XL refurb, trading in my failed GPS 40 to Garmin in Olathe Ks. I had an external antenna for the 40 which helped it in thick woods which I have not needed for the 12XL.

The 12XL does a great job for me, even though it is an early version of the hardware, not upgradable to the "latest" for the 12XL hardware. In particular I prefer the 'ergonomics' of the Garmins in the 12XL case, and the sofware. Sure there are a few changes I'd make, but overal, it is my favorite. I would consider a III+ to be an upgrade. At this time I'm not desperate for a mapping GPS.

My 12XL disappeared for a while, so I bought a yellow Etrex at WalMart. I found it adequate, but definitely not a useful as the 12xl. Primarily, the smaller screen offered less resolution, contrast, and visibility. It also is a bit less sensitive antenna wise. IMO the Etrex might suit a fisherman on a tight budget but a hunter needs to spend a couple of more dollars.

I had a Magellan 4000 when they first came out and never used it much or even liked it...Then I bought a Garmin Legend...-WOW- What a difference!!!!Great unit...

For those of you who have never tried it.......Have you ever heard of GEOCACHING?
It is were you go on-line and get CoOrdinates to caches out in the woods and try to find them!! I tried it and my Legend took me right to the spot and ...I WAS HOOKED!!! LOTSOF FUN and not to mention, Great practice for the GPS.

Howdy Folks... I got myself one of those Garmin Rhino 120. I love the features on this thang and would agree that it's an state of the art product. Now i'll be waiting for the newer version with color screen w/ detail map and a radio that works over 10 miles. Garmin... get your idea flowing.

I have the Garmin E-Trex, the yellow one and it has served my purpose fine. Only drawback is when you go into bottoms or hollows the signal will probably be lost.

Last year I bought a Garmin Etrex Legend. It does all I need it to. Already it has helped me get back to camp three times! Not that I was lost, but it was getting late and it pointed the way, and saved me from having to walk an extra hour or more before I got to a recognizable area. GPS is wonderful-and I carry spare batteries.

I have the Garmin Etrex Camo. Which ended up being the euro model. I haven't been able to find anybody that can tell me what the differences are, but I am a little disappointed that it is not what I thought I was buying. I contacted Garmin and they said since I bought it several years ago there wasn't anything they could or would do. Kind of expected that. Now done with the venting. Until I found out it wasn't what I thought I had bought I was very happy with the unit. It does everything I want flawlessly. I have had it in some pretty thick cover and it has never lost signal. I use it connected to a laptop using MS street and trips and I can see the vehicle Icon switch lanes when I do. Pretty cool. I also use a free product called USAPhotomaps for plotting my treestand locations, rubs, scrapes and major trail intersections. The program lets you download satellite pictures, and topo maps from microsoft terraserver and you can print the maps with your gps waypoints on the maps.
It does have some problems syncing with the sattelights in my carry pouch, but only if I don't let it sync before I put it in the pouch. Overall if you are looking for a basic GPS then I would highly recommend the etrex camo.

I 've been old fashioned about this, keeping to my maps and stuff, but I think its time especially with the chilly receiptions and interactions with the seemingly anti rangers I've run into in SBNF.
It may come in handy to verify where I am at exactly.
Late last year I was looking at the I finder hunt but reading this and going to the garmin site the Rhino 530 looks pretty good.
The thing I hate about these and all electronics is that they are outdated in a short time.
It seems like prices have at least come down everything I saw last year was $499 to $599
I see the Rhino 530 at $399.00 at Cabelas.

I guess it would be good for everything (hunting, fishing and road trips)

Anybody have one?

I need to move pretty quick on this turkey season is coming up fast.

I have had garmin handheld units for years. Just went with an All-in-one Mio C310x which uses Sirf-III and can do both USGS maps and satellite photo images.

I'm a Garmin guy. During my first tour in Iraq, we couldn't get an Army PLGR (probably a good thing in hindsight), so I loaded my simply little eTrex Legend up with waypoints and an Arabian basemap and off I went to drive from Kuwait to Baqubah, Iraq. After OIF3, I bought myself a GPSmap 60Cx, a 2GB microSD card, and City Navigator to use on my motorcycle. When I get back, I'll upgrade City Navigator, and get topo maps (for hunting) as well.

Garmin 60 CSx. for xmas from the wife. Had her schooled on the features needed. Got lost on last years g38 hunt in Kennedy Meadows. Never go without a gps again. Great unit easy to use Proprietary maps only though. $100.00 for each set ie: topo city , lakes. Takes two aa batteries !

Delorme PN-40. Upgraded from a Garmin 60C and lovin' it!

Download aerial color photos to your gps. The best thing ever! Fantastic display detail. Nothing beats it. That I'm aware of.

I have two Garmin Rino 120's. I hunt with my son and thought I lost him a couple of years ago. Luckily he is well trained and we found each other in short order but that 15 minutes scared the $%#& out of me. Got the 120's and now I can find him, or at least his last location, in a moments notice. Good piece of mind for me but really good piece of mind for momma bear.

I also like the map feature. It is easy to download into the computer so you can keep track of trips and places you find game.
