Hi, i was looking over my choices for 2010 and made a few calls to DFG and have a question for you guys. I have 0 points as I have never applied for a restricted deer hunt, so I am starting from scratch. I was thinking of putting in for X1 as in 2008 there was about a 64% chance of drawing there even with 0 points and putting the B zone as a backup. I have never hunted either of these areas and plan on scouting B this spring/summer as soon as I figure out where to head for public land. I normally hunt D3-D5 religiously and will probably get a second tag for that area. I live in Davis and have two small boys so I have to make the absolute most of my time and will forego fishing this summer in order to scout. What are your thoughts on X1? I am not asking for any special secrets, just wanted some helpful advise. I have yet to take a deer ( in my entire life). I passed on a buck that I was 99% sure was a shooter this year near Colfax because he was in the shade and I couldn't make out his points in the light, before I could get a better look, he took off. I really enjoy hunting, even though my results have been less than stellar up to this point. Thanks again, I appreciate any help.-Lahontan

D-4/5 Question....

Hello Everyone…

Hello Everyone…

I’m trying to piece together a solid hunting strategy for the French Meadows/Hell Hole area of Zones D- 4/5….I got a 2 x 2 up there late this October, but I know the area is home to some real monsters despite low deer numbers overall….

So here is my question for the day… Does anyone know the story/thinking behind the big game refuge in that area…It has me scratching my head….Up north we have the Tehama Wildlife area, that serves as a wintering area for deer….

Clearly the game refuge I’m talking about isn’t winter ground, it’s up way too high….So what is it’s purpose?….I’ve found some BIG sheds in the low country well below the refuge and those are the type of deer I’m looking to harvest…Do those big boys wait out the season in that refuge or is the refuge a typical DFG project that just doesn’t make much sense?…Your thoughts?

i just got back from getting skunked on a turkey hunt, but if it was still deer season i would of had a great hunt. i didnt see any turkeys so just for fun i put stalk on some deer that were hanging around. i got within 20 yards of a buck chasing a doe around, and a few other does. i came across another buck and doe, a real pretty 4x4 and got to within about 50 yards before they just calmly trotted off. i guess the rut is in full swing in d5. it was really neat to be that close and to see the deer chasing each other around. it sure made hiking around all day worth it.

This weeks WON paper had a pic of a nice buck and the hunter said he found a tick on his back. He got checked and had Lyme disease.

I've been tested twice out here in CA for Lyme. If you get a tick bite kill the tick and tape it to some paper so the doc can identify what kind of tick it was. There are several tests for different ticks.

I know several turkey hunters who have died from Lyme, it's not a nice way to go.

Permethrin spray and the Permethrin soak liquid is the best way to keep the ticks off you while in the field. I use liquid soak stuff, fill up a bucket with my clothes and dump er in. Cheaper and faster than spraying clothes all night.

I got a nice blacktail deer this year, however I got it on a stormy day and as I was caping it lots of water got under the cape, that and a combination of being out in the woods a day too longand messed it up. My taxidermist tried to save it but couldn't, so I was wondering if anyone had one out there, frozen, tanned, what ever if it's a nice late season black tail or even mulie I might consider it. My taxidermist also recommended that it had to be at least 17 to 18" neck size. Also if anyone knows of a Place that sells capes I'd appreciate any hookups. Thanks in advance.
