I'm on the fence. I have a couple of older shotguns, and a couple of older rifles. All of them are 80 years or older. I need a good Rifle though. I think I want to buy a TC encore in .308. Here are my main reasons and listed in order of importance. My other choices would be either a REM 700 in .308 or 30.06, or an AR type in .308.

1. Price. I know once I have the frame I could set up another caliber for much less on the next go around. This is a huge purchase for me. I have never spent more than $180 on a gun before.

2. Accuracy. From what I read and have heard you get really good groups with these encores, single shot action is pretty solid. I want a gun that will hit 300 yards confidently.

3. Quality. I have a couple of decent shotguns, both Remingtons, one is a model 31, as in 1931, produced for three years, and the other is a model 11, I think it was made somewhere around 1913. They are beautiful, and aside from only shooting 2&3/4 lead only, I love them both and I am very happy. But my rifle situation is a little more bleak. I have a Marlin model 36 in 30 30, it is ugly, a couple of halfway decent 22's and 2 mosin nagants. I want a good gun. I want a gun that will outlast me like my shotguns did their owners. I don't want to spend what it will cost for an Encore, or the other two choices, but don't think I can get into a good piece for any less than $700

4. .308 I rifle hunt deer, pig, coyote. I would like something light for the coyotes, but one gun has to do it all. The reason I like the .308 is because of it's military use. There has been a lot of research and ballistic charting on the round and there are quite a bit of scopes that come reticuled for the .308 drop. I originally wanted a 30.06 but the availability of ballistic scopes for the .308 put me over the fence.

So, if anybody owns an Encore, please let me know what you think.
In a perfect world one of you guys has the TC, the Remington, and the AR in .308 and loves to talk about them. Thanks

i bought a rem 30-06 mod 700 adl took it out of the box free floatded the barrel had a gunsmith cut of 1/2 inch of stock so it would fit me. went to the range shot 2 inch groups. but the last bullet would jam. rem sent me a new spring and folower. took the gun apart andthat fixed yhe jam problem but then the best groups i could get was 2 1/2 inches. tried four kinds of ammo all did the same but never had to adjust the scope to hit 2 inches high at 100 yards.still not happy with the groups. tried some fed fusion 165 gr shot 5 rounds inside a inch at 100 yards and was dead center 2 inchs high at 100 yards. its a real shooter when you can get that kind of groups with one kind of ammo and know that i can use other ammo and not change the impact point just dont get the great groups. right what is your thoughts on this

I have a nice savage in .270 but I am thinking of trading it in for a lighter weight rifle. Perhaps there are options is replacing the wood furniture with a high quality light weight plastic furniture. I saw a thread on a Tikka Lite and Tikka seems to be a very well liked brand but its good to keep all options in mind.

Thanks;

7mm-08 vs 308 Win Blonds vs Brunnetes?

I am writing Savage to see how much it would cost to reconfigure my sons model 11 from .243 to either 7mm-08 or 308 win. I want to compare the price of doing versus buying a new rifle. If it is cheaper to reconfigure the next question is what is the better hunting caliper. For big game we will hunt deer and pigs and hopefully elk if we can draw a tag. based on my research its a toss-up in that the 7mm-08 might have a bit more of an edge in having a flatter trajectory and downrange energy but 308 ammo is easier to come by and might have better performance on pigs and elk. My son is 15 and likes to weightlift and plays high school ball so he is no sissy but I was thinking the 7mm-08 has a bit less recoil.

What caliper would you guys go with or is it really like comparing whats more fun to date blonds vs burnettes?
