I find the new "Turkey Country" almost unreadable. I get the whole outreach aspect, but anybody who is already a member and therefor receiving the magazine ALREADY HUNTS! It would be much better as a fraction on the magazine, not the majority. This last cover explains it all. A pointless article about lead free ammo, Women in the outdoors, and then three headlines about the one tribal hunting story. After thumbing through I thought I was looking at a magazine for female and disabled hunters.

They need to have more productive information printed in their mag. If you watch a hunting channel, it is 90% white tail deer. There is ony a little bit of turkey hunting on tv. "Turkey Country" is really dropping the ball here by not becoming THE go to source for Hunting strategy, Management strategy, gear reviews, and other relevent to hunting info. There are so many types of turkey setups and they decide to print a story about some girl that crawled through cow poop. I don't care about cow poop, I want to hear about what I should do to provide good habitat, what types of strategies are used for Spring, Fall, etc.

This magazine doesn't make me a better hunter, it just makes me think that the NWTF is putting too much money into outreach, and not enough into the core memberships.

Anybody Agree?

EDGEFIELD, S.C. - The National Wild Turkey Federation distributed nearly $250,000 in October 2009 as it continues to advance its mission of benefiting wildlife conservation and protecting hunting traditions. The dollars are distributed to states and programs through the NWTF Hunting Heritage Super Fund.

To date, the NWTF and its partners have spent more than $286 million upholding hunting traditions and conserving nearly 14 million acres of wildlife habitat. Some of the Federation's Hunting Heritage Super Fund projects include improving wildlife habitat, supporting hunter education and providing opportunities for women, youth and people with disabilities to experience outdoor fun through outreach programs.

October's Hunting Heritage Super Fund spending totaled $249,523.66 and included:

* Youth Education: Spent $78,281 to fund scholarships and educational projects, introduce youth to shooting sports, provide education boxes and conduct 4-H workshops.
* Habitat Enhancement: Spent $53,367.56 to improve wildlife habitat by creating more wild turkey nesting areas, planting trees and completing water development projects.
* Land Purchases: Spent $28,750 to purchase land or conservation easements to conserve wildlife habitat and provide additional hunting areas.
* JAKES: Spent $17,234.50 to introduce youth to outdoor activities, conservation and hunting through the JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship) program.
* Wheelin' Sportsmen NWTF: Spent $9,805 to provide opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in outdoor activities and learn about wildlife conservation through Wheelin' Sportsmen and Women in the Outdoors outreach events across North America.
* Hunting Heritage: Spent $9,250 to protect and promote our hunting heritage including contributions to the U.S. Sportsman's Alliance and the National Shooting Sports Foundation.
* Volunteer and Professional Education: Spent $8,169.38 to provide educational opportunities, purchase staff equipment and more.
* Hunter Safety: Spent $6,868.98 to support hunter safety classes and initiatives. Purchased hunter safety materials and equipment, including interactive shooting systems.
* Management: Spent $3,500 on wild turkey management.
* Women's Programs: Spent $2,450 on programs, materials and equipment to introduce women to the outdoors, hunting and conservation.

NWTF chapters invested an additional $31,847.24 in special NWTF projects, equipment purchases and promoting the hunting tradition. In addition to helping fund projects like these, NWTF Hunting Heritage Super Fund banquets combine fun, fellowship and dedication to the wild turkey. They're a great place to meet friends who are passionate about the outdoors, win valuable prizes and buy items unique to the NWTF. Place the highest bid and you could go home with sporting art, hunting guns, knives, calls, outdoor equipment and more.

The Hunting Heritage Super Fund supports the NWTF's multitude of conservation and education programs with money raised from NWTF Hunting Heritage Banquets, donated by corporate sponsors and given to support wildlife conservation.

Founded in 1973, the NWTF is a national nonprofit conservation organization that works to further its twofold mission of conserving wild turkeys and preserving our hunting heritage.

=============================================

Arizona Officials Announce Drawing Results for Spring Hunts

11/17/09

PHOENIX - The more than 35,000 hunters who applied for a tag to hunt spring turkey, javelina, buffalo or bear in 2010 can find out if they were drawn by visiting the Arizona Game and Fish Department's Web site at www.azgfd.gov/draw or by calling (602) 942-3000 (option 2).

Game and Fish officials said that hunt permit-tags will be mailed out to successful applicants no later than Dec. 4. Unsuccessful or rejected applicants will have their refund mailed out by Nov. 27.

There are plenty of remaining tags available on a first-come, first-serve basis for those individuals who forgot to submit an application or were unsuccessful in the 2010 spring drawing. Remaining tags include more than 10,000 javelina tags (328 juniors-only), nearly 200 turkey tags, and just over 70 tags for archery-only bear hunts. For a detailed listing of leftover permits, visit www.azgfd.gov/draw or call (623) 236-7702.

There are now two systems to obtain a leftover tag. Paper applications will be accepted by mail only starting on Monday, Nov. 30 at 8 a.m. (MST). However, beginning on Monday, Dec. 7 at 8 a.m. (MST), hunters can also obtain a leftover tag in person (over-the-counter) from any of the seven Arizona Game and Fish Department offices. A list of office locations is available at www.azgfd.gov/offices.

For those who qualify, there are military hunts available. For additional information on Camp Navajo, call (928) 773-3306 and Fort Huachuca call (520) 533-2549.

Juniors-only hunts
Youngsters interested in hunting have many choices and special seasons that are only open to kids. These hunts offer an outdoor family experience and a memory of a lifetime.

There are more than 300 juniors-only spring javelina tags remaining from the draw for $22.50 (by mail or from department offices only). Juniors-only spring turkey hunts (shotgun shooting shot) are available over-the-counter from any license dealer or department office for just $10. A unique December hunt for sandhill cranes still has several tags (good for three birds) available for $22.50 (by application sent via U.S. mail only).

Both javelina and turkey are big game animals and the minimum age to hunt them is 10 years old. Kids age 10 to 13 must complete an Arizona certified hunter education course to hunt big game which includes turkey and javelina.

The anticipated drawing deadline to apply for a 2010 pronghorn antelope and elk tag is the second Tuesday in February 2010. Winter drawing information and regulations should be available on the department's web site, www.azgfd.gov, by mid to late December 2009.

Note to media: Hunting and fishing continues to be the cornerstone and a primary source of funding for wildlife management and conservation in North America. In Arizona alone, more than 418,000 hunters and anglers spend $3.8 million a day, or $1.3 billion per year, participating in these activities to the benefit of local economies. Regardless of whether one chooses to actively participate in hunting or angling, people interested in wildlife and its future should understand the role sportsmen play in conservation.

So I put in for one of the Game Bird Heritage wild turkey hunts and to my surprise, I was selected for the Nov. 28th Lake Mendocino hunt. I live near Pasadena but will be in Santa Rosa visiting family for Thanksgiving. This hunt should make the trip much more enjoyable.
I've never been turkey hunting before and am not familiar with the area, so I thought I would try and tap the experience here. Anyone have any helpfull tips to offer to a new turkey hunter? I'd love to get some area specific advice, but I'll take all the help I can get.
Thanks in advance,
After the shakes and detox of hunting season wears off I go back to real life until the next year comes around. I am thankful that there are some full timers that keep a site like this running. It is because of you some of us newer to the sport are able to develop our skills. After hours of research and many more hours of scouting, I bagged my first bird in the fall of 07 in the lake isabella area and have been hooked ever since.

Hey guys the Fall Turkey Season is fast approaching. For Hunters that are still looking for a place to hunt on private property, and that are looking for a Guided or Semi Guided Hunt. I want to throw out that we still have a few openings to hunt on our Hunting Lease in Southern California, in Julian.

The Hunt is $650 per person for a two day hunt. The Fall season is only 16 days long and starts on the 14th of November. The fee of $650 includes an oppertunity to take a Tom or Hen, Guided or Semi Guided, plus two nights in the Cabin on the property. The Cabin is a small house that has two bedroom with two beds per room. It has 1 1/2 bathrooms and a full kitchen, and living room, with a wood burning stove.

We are limiting the number of hunters in the Fall season, BUT we still have opening available at this time. This hunt provides a great oppertunity to Harvest a Turkey locally on private property in the Julian area. In scouting a few times the last month, we are seeing the bird starting to group up, and so far we have around 150 birds roosting on the property, and we expect the number to raise as the bird continue to regroup. Last year we had over 250 birds roosting on the property in the fall and winter seasons. This is one of the areas main winter Roosts.

Note, I am a Licensed Guide, and my partner and I have the exclusive legal Hunting rights on the property, through a written and signed Lease. so If I can be of help to you for your Fall or Spring Turkey Hunts, feel free to call me at 760-963-9790 or you can e-mail me at LowellsGunDogs@yahoo.com ask for Larry.

Happy Hunting.
