Anybody get drawn?

=============================================

Arizona Officials Announce Drawing Results for Spring Hunts

11/17/09

PHOENIX - The more than 35,000 hunters who applied for a tag to hunt spring turkey, javelina, buffalo or bear in 2010 can find out if they were drawn by visiting the Arizona Game and Fish Department's Web site at www.azgfd.gov/draw or by calling (602) 942-3000 (option 2).

Game and Fish officials said that hunt permit-tags will be mailed out to successful applicants no later than Dec. 4. Unsuccessful or rejected applicants will have their refund mailed out by Nov. 27.

There are plenty of remaining tags available on a first-come, first-serve basis for those individuals who forgot to submit an application or were unsuccessful in the 2010 spring drawing. Remaining tags include more than 10,000 javelina tags (328 juniors-only), nearly 200 turkey tags, and just over 70 tags for archery-only bear hunts. For a detailed listing of leftover permits, visit www.azgfd.gov/draw or call (623) 236-7702.

There are now two systems to obtain a leftover tag. Paper applications will be accepted by mail only starting on Monday, Nov. 30 at 8 a.m. (MST). However, beginning on Monday, Dec. 7 at 8 a.m. (MST), hunters can also obtain a leftover tag in person (over-the-counter) from any of the seven Arizona Game and Fish Department offices. A list of office locations is available at www.azgfd.gov/offices.

For those who qualify, there are military hunts available. For additional information on Camp Navajo, call (928) 773-3306 and Fort Huachuca call (520) 533-2549.

Juniors-only hunts
Youngsters interested in hunting have many choices and special seasons that are only open to kids. These hunts offer an outdoor family experience and a memory of a lifetime.

There are more than 300 juniors-only spring javelina tags remaining from the draw for $22.50 (by mail or from department offices only). Juniors-only spring turkey hunts (shotgun shooting shot) are available over-the-counter from any license dealer or department office for just $10. A unique December hunt for sandhill cranes still has several tags (good for three birds) available for $22.50 (by application sent via U.S. mail only).

Both javelina and turkey are big game animals and the minimum age to hunt them is 10 years old. Kids age 10 to 13 must complete an Arizona certified hunter education course to hunt big game which includes turkey and javelina.

The anticipated drawing deadline to apply for a 2010 pronghorn antelope and elk tag is the second Tuesday in February 2010. Winter drawing information and regulations should be available on the department's web site, www.azgfd.gov, by mid to late December 2009.

Note to media: Hunting and fishing continues to be the cornerstone and a primary source of funding for wildlife management and conservation in North America. In Arizona alone, more than 418,000 hunters and anglers spend $3.8 million a day, or $1.3 billion per year, participating in these activities to the benefit of local economies. Regardless of whether one chooses to actively participate in hunting or angling, people interested in wildlife and its future should understand the role sportsmen play in conservation.

At church this morning.......my buddy who was the former owner of that Houston, Tx ranch with wild hogs galore..........sidled up to me as the service was closing and whispered that as soon as the service was over......he was going home and pack up his bag and drive to Houston.........immediately!!! The new owner's just recently has allowed my friend's good buddy to live at the ranch and take care of the ranch(the new owners are absentee owners themselves and don't care about hunting). Sooooooo........the new caretaker already moved in and has started trapping for hogs. He called up my friend here in L.A. and told him that there is a 300 lb. hog caught in the corral/trap. My friend said.."don't kill it yet..wait for me and I will drive over there and kill and butcher it for fresh wild hog meat to bring back to L.A.". He is driving back to L.A. on Saturday and I told him......let me wangle a 3 day vacation at work and I will fly to Houston on Wednesday and hunt and drive back with you on Saturday. So.....hope my boss is in a good mood when I pop this "no notice" 3 day vacation request on him.
'Nuff said
God Bless, always
larrysogla
P.S. My Marlin 22" barrel 45-70 lever rifle has not bloodied a hog yet............so will be popping them huge hogs with 45-70 Garrett hard cast hot loaded +P 420 grain hog/elk busting ammo from the treestands. Whoohoooooo!!!!
Life is gooooood!!!!

It seems that its legal to hunt there and isn't too far from me. Better yet, is there anything to hunt there like deer or hogs? It's mainly a BLM park/bicycle area kinda dealy, but hunting is allowed.

ok..a friend and i hunted an area he has access to (yesterday). hiked and hiked...nada. when we were hiking separate, and he said he saw a huge sounder (herd?) of pigs up in the hills. on a long shot we worked this rarely hiked section. up and up and up. at the top, i was a sweaty mess. i had to stop halfway up to strip off layers of clothing. we get to the top, and i literally said, "wow, this is very nice..." i hit the ground. my friend was already down. at my peripheral, i see "shapes". we see about 60 pigs!! that is 120 eyes. they come thru a hole onto our legit property. and the STALK IS ON! we get to around 50 yards. i still cant talk about the huge whitetail i shot and didnt recover, so the sting is still in me, and my confidence is suspect. (oh, i also stuck a huge boar recently, that took weeks to find and arrow again, got my broadhead back! but i didnt shoot it the second time) i need to scrub off about 10 more yards....creep creep creep. my friend whispers..."watch that big one on the right". just that second...she pokes her head up, and sees us effen caught out in the open. she does this little urgent grunt, that clearly translates into, "RUN! there is a chinese dude and a white guy creeping up over the hilltop!!!" it was like a fire drill. they all run into the thickest nastiest patch of foilage, and they are gone.

it was amazing. there were maybe 20-30 little football sized piglets, a bunch of different sized sows, and a smallish boar that was running around humping all the sows, and loving life. given the chance i would have shot him in mid stroke, to make the story funner to tell. he was clearly a crowd pleaser.

it is easy to stay persistent in pig hunting when you get the occasional "close encounter". sooner or later, one is going down. and i will keep you posted
