REMOVING DEER FROM CATALINA: Apparently some of the whack-job environmental groups are again...

Jim Matthews, Outdoor News Service

11/19/09

REMOVING DEER FROM CATALINA: Apparently some of the whack-job environmental groups are again suggesting that California mule deer transplanted to Catalina Island are causing damage to native plants there and want the deer removed. Never mind that if 100 years of overgrazing by wild goats and pigs didn't wipe out the plants, it's unlikely the deer will do it. Never mind that the Catalina Island Conservancy can't or doesn't have the gumption to get rid of bison on the island, which are causing far more damage. But now there is another push to get rid of deer that evolved with the identical plants that live across the Catalina Channel. You've got to be kidding me.

SANTA ROSA ISLAND REFUGE: To harp on the island issue a little more. Santa Rosa Island, now owned by the National Park Service, has an amazing, disease-free population of elk and mule deer that were transplanted to the island from the mainland decades ago. As non-natives, the Park Service plans to eradicate them all in a few years.

Again, there is no documentation that the deer and elk have caused any serious damage to the island native plants (most evolved with similar herbivores when the island was still part of the mainland), and hunters are currently just about the only non-park service staff who visit the island, forking out big bucks to hunt there. If the park service were to take over the hunting program, they could raise enough money each year to finance the recreation and scientific staff to operate the rest of the island park. But no, the NPS wants to kill off the golden-egg-laying chicken and make the island pristine -- and to what end? Wouldn't it make sense to keep those disease-free deer and elk just in case something horrific happens here on the mainland? The big deer are also a wonderful tourist draw.

Went out by myself on Wednesday the 18th with plans to hunt for the next 3 days. Got stopped padded down/ interviewed by Border Patrol (They had just caught a group of 7 and were wondering what I was up to). Now am running a little late. By the time I got there it’s starting to clear, I spot a nice size Doe watched her for about 15 minutes hoping for the buck and nada… Sat there and glassed for about an 1hour..
Ok time to do my rounds and hit all my spots… Noon came around and it’s getting hot nothings moving am tired of glassing....

By this time my only option was to walk, stop and glass and hope to jump something. Climbed this big mountain and started to throw rocks into the bushes…. Well at around 2pm I found the right bush holding this little buck and a Doe… They jumped at around 150 yards and started running away from me.. All I had was an ass shot and I took it… 1 shot one kill right in the chun chun..

So, after the gutting and a few pics I started the dragging game.. Made it to the jeep by 4:20 set up shop and cut it up and on my way home by 5:00, what a day… Time to start getting ready for the G6 hunt… Adios amigos!!!

Question for D-4/5 Hunters...

Hello Everyone…

Hello Everyone…

I’m trying to piece together a solid hunting strategy for the French Meadows/Hell Hole area of Zones D- 4/5….I got a 2 x 2 up there late this October, but I know the area is home to some real monsters despite low deer numbers overall….

So here is my question for the day… Does anyone know the story/thinking behind the big game refuge in that area…It has me scratching my head….Up north we have the Tehama Wildlife area, that serves as a wintering area for deer….

Clearly the game refuge I’m talking about isn’t winter ground, it’s up way too high….So what is it’s purpose?….I’ve found some BIG sheds in the low country well below the refuge and those are the type of deer I’m looking to harvest…Do those big boys wait out the season in that refuge or is the refuge a typical DFG project that just doesn’t make much sense?…Your thoughts?

:smiley-mouse: What an awesome season we had this year. Myself and three of my buddies hunted 3rd season and managed to take 2 nice bucks. With 18 inches of snow on the ground for the opener it was very easy to spot any movement on the ground. Opening morning I passed on a skinny 4x4 (about 18" wide) and a 3x3. By Monday morning I pretty much was kicking myself in the behind for not taking that buck. Monday 12:00 high, my buddy and I spot a couple does feeding. Than here comes daddy. A huge 4x4 standing broadside. He was everybit 30" or bigger. Two problems, he was two ridges over and about 800 yards. We watched him for a while but there was no way to put any sort of stock on him because of the snow and his location. It was great just to see him. Nada the rest of the day. Tuesday morning we get down to our spot and start glassing. There my buck was 300 yards up the hillside, straight across the canyon. He was close to 600 yards away. That is a pretty far shot for me, but that morning everything was in the right place. Good rest, straight across shot and broadside feeding. Shooting a 300WBY with 180 barnes TSX. I let the first two shots fly. Too high. The third shot I put it at about 20" right on his shoulder. Big buck down. It was awesome. Now I know why my first two shots were high. Later we ranged it at 523 yrds. What an easy drag straight down the mountain. Even though that deer tackled me three or four times dragging him down. Still had a bull tag. So out we go Wed. morning. Drive to the butcher Wed. afternoon, go to Walmart because Norms out of his Diabetes meds. Sit in Wamart parking lot for two hours and back out for the evening hunt with an hour of shooting light. My buddy Norm shoots a 4x3 at 60 yards crossing a little meadow right in front of him ten minutes before dark. Go figure. He didn't even change back into his hunting clothes. I have a 26" barrell on my gun and it fit inside of the rack. What a great deer. I also had another hunting buddy of mine shoot a very similar buck close to mine. He was hunting a couple miles from us.The last picture is of all three bucks all shot within a couple of miles. Allot of great food, good laughs and good story telling. Thanks guys, Duane:JHO rocks:

Making plans for 2010 season.M7 muzzle loader sounds like it could be a great hunt.the time of year and from all i have read seen pictures of on the web,the burn seems to be recovering nicely.i have hunted d14 since 1986 and i am not familiar with this zone D13 at all.i have hunted utah during thier muzzle loader season in the past.i am not asking for any secret spots lol, just general areas to start and if the wilderness areas are worth hunting also.seems to me these deer wil still be in rut when this hunt takes place.if not it will be cooler weather which always seems to help hunting in california.also considering the santa barbara and san luis muzzle loader hunts as other choices.i have also hunted the A zone during rifle season was just a little to warm for me then. any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
