AREA LAKESFish are putting the feedbag on, as winter is right around the corner.Pewaukee Lake has provided musky anglers with the most consistent action. Okauchee, Lac La Belle, Oconomowoc, Monona and Waubesa also have given up many nice-sized fish. Weeds in 5 to 8 feet of water will hold many smaller muskies. Breaks in 12 to 20 feet are where the majority of bigger fish were found. Casting glide baits, jerk baits, Bulldawgs, double-bladed bucktails or twitch baits triggered many following fish. Most muskies, however, were caught using suckers on quick-strike rigs.
The organization wants you to save the heart from deer you harvest and donate the organ(s) to help feed its birds. The group cares for and rehabilitates hundreds of injured birds of prey each year; it had 65 birds, including 15 bald eagles, at its facility in early November.

Three online videos can help landowners save oak trees on their property while eliminating some of Wisconsin's most common and problematic invasive plants. The videos can be found on the Take Action on Invasive Species page of the DNR Web site at www.dnr.state.wi.us. The three invasive plants featured in the videos - garlic mustard, buckthorn and honeysuckle - remain green as the other plants and trees around them are losing leaves or turning brown. The invasives compete for water and nutrients with native plants, often crowding them out and the wildlife that depends on them. Garlic mustard also emits chemicals that can prevent oaks and other plants from growing. And honeysuckle and buckthorn, both invasive shrubs, can shade out other plants, said Matt Zine, who leads the DNR crew that fights invasive species on state natural areas.

AREA LAKESWater temperatures were reported to be in the upper 40s to low 50s.Musky anglers continue to do well on Pewaukee Lake. Okauchee, Lac La Belle and Oconomowoc also have given up nice-sized fish. Musky fishing will only get better as the water temperatures cool further. The best action was around weeds in 5 to 8 feet in areas with bait fish. Breaks in 12 to 20 feet also will hold fish. Casting glide baits, jerk baits, Bulldawgs, double-bladed bucktails or twitch baits triggered many following fish. Most muskies, however, were caught using suckers on quick-strike rigs. Soaking two suckers while casting will provide you with a better opportunity to catch a trophy musky. Place a sucker boat-side a few feet down for following fish while casting. Suspend the other under a slip float over deeper water.
