Young animals’ best chance of survival is in their natural homes.

JEFFERSON CITY – Resource Scientist Jason Sumners got a call recently from a concerned citizen who had a newborn white-tailed deer fawn. He gets them every year, just as every office of the Missouri Department of Conservation does.
The fawn had been near a highway with its mother when traffic spooked the doe, Instinct took over. The doe bounded into nearby woods, a move that normally would draw a predator’s attention. The fawn dropped to the ground, where it lay stock still.
Key Messages:

Missourians care about conserving forests, fish and wildlife.

JEFFERSON CITY–A few extra precautions while boating and camping over the Memorial Day weekend will help save the places you love. That is the message from the Missouri Department of Conservation concerning invasive pests on land and water.
Missouri is on the front lines of battles to stop the spread of zebra mussels, emerald ash borers, and gypsy moths. None of these species is native to Missouri. All have the potential to damage Missouri’s economy and ecology.
BOONVILLE, Mo. -- There is something about a big tree that commands interest, respect, and a certain amount of awe. Jim Weyland of Howard County has a big tree that not only induces awe; he now has reason to celebrate it as well, as it was recently named a Missouri Champion northern red oak (Quercus rubra) by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC).
Weyland’s tree measures 216 inches in circumference, stands 98 feet high and has an average crown spread of 74 feet.
WEST PLAINS, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is asking anglers who fish select Ozark streams to help with a research project by reporting their catches of tagged smallmouth bass. One of Missouri’s most popular game fish, smallmouth bass are found predominantly in cool, clear streams and large reservoirs in the Ozarks. Bass season for Ozark streams runs from May 25 through Feb. 28, 2014.
Princeton, Mo. – Most people visit Lake Paho to catch trophy largemouth bass or to enjoy the green rolling hills of northwest Missouri. History lurks among the coves and fields, too. The 273-acre lake was built in Mercer County by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) in the late 1940s, making it one of MDC’s oldest public fishing lakes.
ST. JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Discover the lure of Missouri outdoors with the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Free Fishing Days June 8 and 9. During Free Fishing Days, anyone can fish in the Show-Me-State without having to buy a fishing permit, trout stamp or trout park daily tag. Normal regulations, such as limits on size and number of fish an angler can keep, remain in effect. Some private fishing areas may still require permits, and trespass laws remain in effect on private property.
