Arizona elk
Well, the deadline for applications to be in AZGFD's office is only a few hours away. What did you all put in for?
I applied for points only, and will have 13 elk points next year, and 18 antelope points. Might draw a tag next year.

Points only for me too. I'll have 4 elk points this year. I could draw an archery tag but I think I'll hold out for a few decades then apply for a unit with 400" potential. Just kidding.....but seriously, that's pretty much my plan.

If you're planning on drawing unit 9 archery then it will take you a few decades to draw, seriously. As a non-res, if you don't have maximum points, you don't have a chance at that hunt. Best to apply for other units on the rim.

I plan on waiting as long as it takes. I can hunt elk in several states every year while I wait for my tag. I'm not cashing in my points in UT or AZ until I get the unit I want to hunt. I'm in no hurry...

With 13 points I'd say your odds are much better than 1 in a million in any AZ unit, well, at least a little better!

I was honestly kidding about waiting for a chance to shoot a 400" bull. I hunted a non managed part of NM in 2008 and saw a few bulls over 300" I shot a small 6x6 that I was very excited about.
There are quite a few units in NM, AZ, UT, and NV with real trophy potential but I've always wanted to go on one of those hunts where you don't feel bad passing on a few 320" bulls every day to shoot a "big" one.
As hard as public land elk hunting is, I can't ever imagine passing up a shot at a 340ish bull. That seems BIG enough to me!
While 340" bulls might be a possibility throughout the west, you have to be in a really great unit to set that as a realistic DIY archery goal.......at least that's my opinion.
