Parking for access to public lands is often less than ideal. Leaving your pick up along the roadside is advertising that you're hunting nearby. So I arrange with a small shop several miles from my hunting area to leave my pick up parked there all day. I explain that I'm biking with friends.
Out-of-sight from the road and hidden: Before dawn I drop off my hunting clothes, rifle, and gear. Then I park my pick up at the shop and peddle back to this spot. The bike is lifted over the fence and hidden with an olive drab tarp. I change clothes and head over the ridge to hunt.
The deer is skinned and quartered in the forest. Meat is placed in GI bags. I change clothes and peddle back to the pick up. I drive to the site and lift the hood as if there is something wrong. When I can hear no cars are coming, I stow my gear and the meat, then head home. Lastly, I buy a case of cold ones from the shop and thank him for the favor.

What was your rationalle to not want anyone to know you were hunting?
Were you worried about the tree-huggers key'ing your truck? That's a worthwhile worry and it's happen to me personally and it sucked.
Alternatively, were you worried about other hunters knowing about your spot? Personally, I want other hunters to know that I'm in a general area... they might take more caution before slinging an arrow or bullet at a noise, or they might just move on to next wide spot in the road.
Regardless, in this day and age you are asking for trouble leaving a rifle, no matter how well hidden, in the woods along side the road.

Could be posted property? Even if you have permission, not wise to advertise.

Hmmmmmmm.... are you sure your not hunting private property....
No trick like that is neccessary if you aint doing nothing wrong. Sounds kind of sketchy on what your doing there. That's just to much work if your just doing some good ol' hunting.

That was one of his "old tricks" from when he lived in Northern California. A way to get from the road to the BLM land on the other side of the vineyards.

Dakota Safari based in Wall was reputed to have slashed tires and poured sugar into gas tanks. This organization of bad guys was broken up by the Game Commission a few years ago. But they still don't like it that hunters access Buffalo Gap Nat'l Grasslands to hunt mule deer and antelope without paying daily trespass fees. In California, access to coastal BLM lands is difficult at best. BLM land is typically leased for the grazing rights but many of these lease holders post the land. No trespassing signs are common.
Being cautious and sneaky is not illegal. Trespassing and hunting out of season is illegal. Please do not suggest that I participate in illegal activities. Thank you.

Thanks for the tip but I'll pass on this one. The 007 stuff would make me too paranoid.

I agree. When ever I see a vehicle already parked to access an area I always wish I had got there first so they would know I'm there instead of me knowing they are there. Or if a person were to get hurt and not told anyone of there 007 plan resucers would start looking in the right place. I always figure it would take a lot of b---s to mess with a persons vehicle if you think they are hunting. A hunter has a weapon and the vandle doesn't know when they may return or maybe only few hundreds (with in warning shot gun range) away. Sound like alot of unneeded work to me considering I don't anticipate any vandalism where I hunt. Besides it is good for the general public to know that "we" (hunters) are around and partaking or that we even exist. Many times I will let myself be seen just for that reason.

Yeah, I just want to go hunting and don't have enough time to BS with trying to go undercover! If someone see's me going hunting, great they know I'm there! Your car can get vandalize or broken into anywhere so there is no reason to worry about something that might not happen. When I get done after a long hunt I want to be able to throw my gear in the truck and get home, not get done hunting-change clothes-leave my gear hidden?-jump on a bike-hope my car is still in the parking lot where I left it! To much work for me

Hey T.R.; there's my post, if you see an improper "suggestion", I will appoligize. However I think your being sneaky and cautious and going over the fence suggested more than my comment.
I have permission to hunt a parcel or two of private property where the owner will revoke my priveledge if I let anyone know. I can understand your secretiveness.

I'm not easily offended but perhaps a bit defensive at times. No apologies are needed!

There is a reservoir in North end of the Los Padres NF in Monterey County that has decent brown and rainbow fishing. Pretty little lake with Monterey Pines around it. You park and walk in a ways to get there. The parking area is right next to a trailer park.
You park your rig and walk away and it will be broken into or worse. It's amazing with all the residents there that they NEVER see what happens. The beach access lots in Monterey Bay are nearly as bad for getting your tires slashed.

Duclayer,
I can understand leaving the deer bhind to get the truck. But, why on earth would your friend leave the rifle?? Can't be that heavy to pack a rifle back to camp..In one word, STUPID, to leave the rifle behind..Desearved to get it copped...

His son was very young, about one & half miles from his truck,he said he thought he might have to carry his son back,he was on his own land and thought his gun would be safe We all make mistakes. But no one deserves to be ripped off!
