Unfortunately this will be happening more and more. People who have no experience or ability, attempting dangerous trips based on the percieved safety valve the PLB creates. IMHO, if you trigger the EMS you should be prepared to pay all costs incurred...

Make them pay for ridiculous calls. Everytime the helicopters go up those men and women put their lives in jeopardy. OK for real emergencies, but it never ceases to amaze me what people call 911 for. One freebie for accidental and the next one cost you a minimal fee increasing greatly the more it happens. Or put on a wilderness preparedness and survival class that cost money(creating revenue) that is required to take if you choose to buy an ELT for personal use(minimizing operational costs and emergencies). Keep the uneducated out of the backcountry.

Just ridiculous. If you don't think you can take care of the situation at hand, don't put yourself in it. Duh.

Wow! that kind of thing would never even cross my mind, what are people thinking. Society is on the verge of losing all common sense, I am glad to say I still have mine.

It ain't just yuppies! Here in my neck of the woods the government has sent over 50 searchers, dogs, and two helicopters to search for a 73 year old man from up north who tried to climb to the top of Mt. Whitney by himself. A group of hikers talked to him Sunday afternoon a little more than a mile from the summit, but he hasn't been seen since.
One letter writer to the newspaper said that instead of spending all that tax money searching for a 73 year old tree hugger, we should just let natural selection take its course.

That's a very good idea man! I agree also on the charge them for undeserving emergencies.
BTW, SPOT has an optional insurance (very affordable), that should be used in this kind of situations...just like car/house insurance, the premium goes up if you make a claim...

Nanny State
This is a direct result of the NANNY STATE. This is what our society has devolved into. I wish I had that device 15 yrs ago when I busted my ankle three miles from the pickup. NOW that was a sombiotch.
Now I guess if I get crap on my hands while wiping my big fat ass in the woods I can call for a wipey.
