DURHAM, N.C. -- Faye Williams, the 61-year-old woman attacked by a deer last week in a fenced yard, credits her survival to God.

How else could a 5-foot-2-inch woman with bad knees and a bad back fend off a four- or five-point buck?

Williams, a certified nursing assistant who cares for Ernest E. Suggs, was hanging laundry in Suggs' backyard Friday when the deer leapt over the chain-link fence and gouged her legs with its antlers.

``I was in such a tight area,'' Williams said. ``I didn't have nowhere to go. I saw that rack and I just freaked out. I didn't know what to do. It's the awfulest experience I've had in my life.''

The deer, its mouth covered with blood, immediately went after her, its pointy antlers aimed at her abdomen. But somehow - she still doesn't know how - Williams pushed its head down with her left hand while trying to scramble away. It lunged twice, thrusting its antlers into her left upper thigh and calf, and throwing her against the house, injuring her right shoulder.

``When I fell down to the ground,'' she said, ``I thought he was going to ram my face. There was no way I could've held him back.''

Just then, a neighbor who had heard her screams hopped over the fence, scaring the buck away. Williams, who had never seen a deer in the neighborhood, is at home, nursing her wounds.

``I'm very fortunate,'' she said. ``I thank God I didn't get hurt any more than I was. I'm glad it was me instead of a child.''

"I'm glad it was me instead of a child..."

That one goes in the book. ###Once again, my faith in humanity and basic goodness is buoyed up.
