What areas are you guys planning on Backpack Hunting this year?
I was planning on Colorado but went for a point instead.
I will definitly be up in A-20 this year and the out of state stuff will be draw dependant.

Well since I read in an earlier post, "no hunting allowed in wilderness areas", I guess I will have to resort to a "stealthy resourceful approach" to obtain my venison...

It's looking likely that I'll be hunting elk in NM for the 4th year in a row--about a 90% chance there since I put in with an outfitter...I'll probably be spiking out 4-7 miles from a road trailhead depending on which unit I draw--in one of the units there is no need to spike out.
Other than that, things are up in the air. I'm interested in doing backcountry hunts once again. It's been since the 90's when I was over 50 miles from the nearest road hunting when I lived up in AK. I've lost a lot of weight and have been hitting stairmasters or treadmill 5x/week...so, feeling good about it this year.

my goal by year end is to harvest a black bear with a bow http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley_prayin_ani.gif in central nor-cal areas..................tra
Perhaps archery antelope. I'd like to try decoying one of those guys. That's in addition to the annual elk hunt which my wife feels is much more important. She'd rather I spent my time focusing on elk and moose since they fill freezers and she has this theory that once the freezer is full hunting season should be over; boy does she have a lot to learn.

It's a week in SW Colorado for me for elk and maybe black bear if I decide to buy an over-the-counter tag at the last minute. That's usually just in case I happen to stumble across one. I may try for mulies somewhere near San Diego too. There's usually a ton of left-over tags close by. I'm not too optimistic about those prospects, but it may just serve as an excuse to go out and walk the local mountains.

Thanks for the welcome. I plan on hunting Unit 75. I put in for the first season either-sex draw, but if that fails my second choice for the draw is a second season cow tag for the same area. If that fails I'll just buy an OTC bull tag, again for the same area, second season. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-faces-toast-beers.gif

Seriously, I always put in for the "premium draw" tags and then when I don't get drawn, I buy an OTC bow tag.
A lot of places out here in the West are hurting for water and will make for some very hard hunting, but you know it still beats work...

You got that right buddy. I drew my first choice last year but had to cancel my hunt. I wasn't bitter about that or anything. Nothing is going to stop me from going this year
I think I'll do my usual week in the Yolla Bollies, and I hope to get a few days in in the hi part of D5. If I luck out and draw in X8 I'll go up and stumble around there. Then it's off to OR for my annual redneck hunt (hunting with my old Oregon redneck buddies; not hunting FOR rednecks).
I can't wait. Maybe I'll go fishing to make the time go faster.

Have you ever hunted unit 70 or 71? That's where I was going to try this year... but I'm not very familiar with the area, so I'm looking for any info that I can find... I usually hunt unit 65, but decided to try to see some new country this year...

84Toyota...I wish I could have talked to you before the draw deadline. I was researching to no end on 64/64 for deer, looked like great country but couldnt find anybody that actually hunted it. Did you hunt rifle or archery?

I've never hunted units 70/71, sorry I can't help you out there. I've have hunted unit 64/65 for both elk & deer during rifle season. We saw tons of mulies in the lower elev. portions in the Cimmarron SWA area. I had 2 opportunities on 2 separate, large bucks but ended up going home with an unfilled deer tag that season. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-hitting-self.gif But that's another story.
