We're hitting the high desert in the sage this weekend. Lots of snow, ice, temps in the teens. My buddy wants to bring his dog. It was raised in Grass Valley CA and lives in the mild Willamette Valley. It spends all winter within a couple feet of the wood stove and shivers the rest of the time.
He wants to bring it along. Good or bad idea? I think it'll be fine, he'll catch hell from the iwfe and daughters if the dog comes back with missing toes or portions of an ear. I know nothing of the breed.

It's not so much the breed than it is what the dog is used to. If it is an indoor dog by the fire all the time then I would say it doesn't have much of a winter coat. They build up a tolerance to the cold too. The dog is not going to die if you bring it, but I doubt it is going to be very comfortable. And if your buddy is going to be worrying about the dog the whole time, that will probably make for a bit of a pain in the butt.
An indoor living hound huh? I thought that was illegal. JK So what's there to do in the high desert this time of year besides predator calling?

Besides yotes, there's Jacks, cottontails, and maybe a badger or two. Some shed huntin and a big ole kitty if we're real lucky. We'll be near a muley wintering area and where there is deer there's something that will want to eat them.

Them Redbones are a hearty breed for sure and soon as it strikes it's gonna forget all about the cold. More chance of him running his paws off than anything else. I had one years ago and have to say he was one of my favorites once we got him dialed in on the right game. Biggest concern like I said is if he's laying about his pads are soft and he'll just run them ragged and bloody on a hot lead gotta keep them in shape.
