I just read an article written by Jim Matthews about Cliff McDonalds' discovery that the USPS has been drilling wells in the Mojave National Preserve w/o any Envro reports or public input.

This is a prime example of the crazy system we face on this issue.

Government is not a friend.

The people who run the park service are not on our side or even unbiased.

This thing has made me sick for a long time.

What are they drilling for? Water? What's the big deal? Just asking.

pbrdog:There has been a longterm concerted effort by SCI,Ca F&G, and others to open up 12 wells for water for wildlife but the PS has stymied every effort by requiring environmental assessments and public input now they're violating their own 'rules' by drilling wells w/o any EA or Public Input.

Ohhhhh, I see. But isn't it good that at least they're drilling for water? Is that what everyone wanted anyway?

MNP Resource Mgr Larry Whalon called me this morning about my requested information.Hunting in the preserve is all year with varmints or jack rabbits.I asked about the 2000 proposal to ban varmint hunting,he told me there was a petition by the Sierra Club to ban all small game hunting but it went to the Dept of Interior and no further .All Ca Dept of Fish & Game regs apply, when I asked about handguns for hunting he referred me to Ca Dept of F&G regs.He said they only drilled one well at the old RR Station at Kelso and went thru the required EA & Public Input .He explained the other wells weren't being drilled just serviced and rehabed to bring them up to present day health codes.

I went to the Kelso Station opening, got to meet and speak to Congressman Jerry Lewis about the "Water for Wildlife" and his aid Spencer about the wells we need for wildlife plus I spoke to the new Supt Schramm after overhearing a conversation about trying to locate ocotillo so I chimed naming the family ,genus and species and was recognized as a botanist but I advised I wasn't a botantist I was trained as a wildlfe mgt biologist in AZ.
