To each his own only found 1 page of reloading data in the hornaday book.I really liked the new lever revolution ammo being made by hornaday in 450 marlin,444 marlin,45-70,35 rem and 30-30 turns a 30-30 into a 250++ yd hunting rifle Http://www.hornaday.com (http://Http://www.hornaday.com/)
The thought process behind this is the rifle would be used for close cover bear and elk and also as a camp rifle for my old lady in Grizzly country. It would be short and handy, with I hope enough power for lose range arguement settling. Hopefully with not enough recoil to scare her. She shoots my 40-65 on a regular basis and enjoys it.

Use this to get your calculations http://sst.benchrest.com/ it has 3224 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle" it was and is the most powerful rimmed cartridge ever that was specifically developed for a lever action rifle, having as much energy remaining at 100 yards as the 450 Marlin" from the Hornaday Handbook of Cartridge Reloading p 570. I wonder if this will be that much fun for your wife to shoot. Why not a new SS Marlin XLR in 450 marlin,444 marlin or 45-70 with the new Hornaday Lever Revolution Ammunition? Those shells will anchor a bear.Go to http://www.marlinfirearms.com and look up the XLR and Lever Revolution ammo. There is another choice http://www.wildwestguns.com/

I bought myself a TC Encore in 405 Winchester this last year.Only factory ammo i can find is Hornaday 300 grain spire point or flat nose. The flat nose shoots best in my single shot, with 1 inch groups if i do my job at 100 yards. The recoil is heavy so i added a better recoil pad and a scope with extended eye relief. My idea is to use it for hogs and until my freezer empties it will have to wait another month or two. It would also be great on Elk, Bear and buffalo out to about 200 yards max i think. The Ruger # 1 and TC Encore are excellent choices for the handloader ,Woodleigh offers a 300 grain corbon and Barnes offers an X I belive along with the Hornaday 300 grainers mentioned .Good Luck
Thanks for the thoughts gentlemen.

The .405 has a kick to it. That also translates into serious muzzle energy; I love it! Teddy Roosevelt used it to take large african game. I took a groundhog with mine last year.

I once built a Falling Block Works Hi Wall in .405 Winchester. It was a hoot~ Sold it to a NM rancher who just had to have it. I'm sure he still shoots it quite a bit.~AMMOe

Hey, Chuk N. Lead, you did better than Teddy with your .405, his targets were much larger than the ground hog you hit. I appreciated your sense of humor.
Has anyone seen a #1 in .405 yet? I have been looking in 3 states and come up with blank looks when I ask about them.

The gun shop in Rockville had one two or three years ago; may still be there.

I have the stainless/laminated version and like it quite well. Right now, the Hornady 300gr bullet in either flat point or soft point is the way to go due to cost. For hunting, I'd switch to the Barnes or something like the Woodleigh 400gr. for big, bad animals. Of course one could always throw a little lead downrange in the form of a CP 265gr or a Leadhead 270gr bullet. Just got this one so it hasn't been blooded yet. Need to do some more paper-poking to see what it really likes, too.
I picked it up off GB for under $600 NIB and there was another there not collecting many bids. Give it a try and good luck.

Thanks Joe. I'm doing my ten days on a CZ550 Fs in 9.3x62 then I'm ready for something else. While getting ready for work this morning i had the television on Vs formally OLN and Larry Weishuhn took a 300lb whitetail with a TC Encore in 405 at 163 yards. You could see the bullet in flight as it hit the deer, the entrance wound was inpressive and the transfer of energy could be seen in the deers short run before expiring. Couldn't belive the footage. I'll be spending some time at the local range with my TC Encore in 405 prepareing for my blacktail hunt on a friends ranch.

I kinda like my C. Sharps 1895 with 520 gr. SPG lubed Snover, 65 gr. Swiss 2F, Fed. stabdard primers. After the first firing I just neck size so I can seat the bullet on a .060 wad with my thumb. Doesn't shave lead that way.

[attachment=48405:124_2466.JPG]Went to the range with a friend today to sight in his new 223 .I took my 308 and" thumper " my 405 TC Encore. Wasn't planning on shooting much because of a sore shoulder. Both are accurate, but thumper always suprises me.So today I fling 3- 300 grain flat nose downrange, then clean and shoot a 3 shot group. Wow I love this gun, my friend was impressed. After shooting it himself, he was even more so because it's named" thumper" for a reason.
