We need to have a large work party for a concentrated effort to complete
some tasks at Hollenbeck Canyon. We have scheduled this work day for
Saturday February 25, 2006. Please set aside a portion of your day to
come to Hollenbeck and help us on this important project.
Much has been accomplished to create a great environment for dove and to
return this area to its native natural state. But we need to finish some
work.
One reason for this project is that DFG has been doing a great job this
year preparing the area for a great dove season. I was out there
yesterday and there was a flock of more than 200 doves. They were
attracted by the seeding we have been doing for the wheat and safflower
fields. I can imagine what we will have this coming September. WE have
planted more land and have our irrigation system working at peak
capacity. The fences are mostly gone. Most of the trash and
appurtenances from the prior farming operation have been removed. The
mulefat plantings in the erosion channel are growing. Many of the oaks
planted are starting to grow. I see coyotes and deer out there all the time.
For our day on February 25th we can use as many people as possible for
as long as possible. We will start at 7 AM and work all day. You can
come early and stay late or come late or come early and work part of the
day. One of the things we must do is to install nesting cones for dove.
We have food and water and habitat. The one thing we do not have is
nesting for the dove.
And I know you are all quail guys. Randy Botta has surveyed Hollenbeck
along with Tim Dillingham and they have picked out a couple of quail
water source sites. I will be working with Tim in the next month to
confirm the site and obtain approval for a construction project for a
new water source. This winter and spring I expect to complete a quail
water source project at Hollenbeck.
Pleas mark your calendar for Saturday February 25th and come out to
work. We need one big project day here and I believe we need to show DFG
our appreciation for the work they have done this year for us. And of
course the ultimate beneficiaries of our work will be you and me.
Please RSVP if you will be joining us. Email to thometz@sciti.com or
call 619.602.0312 or 619.478.5740 and leave a message.
Parking will be on site in a designated area. Enter the work site off of
Highway 94 at the bottom of the hill when you are traveling eastbound
past Rancho Jamul ranch headquarters. The entrance to the work site is
about one half mile west of the Honey Springs Road/Highway 94 junction.
Hollenbeck Canyon
February 25, 2006 Project
7 AM to 4 PM
List of Tasks
1. Fabricate and install dove cones for dove nesting
Hardware cloth, a pattern for preparation of the cones and wire
to secure the cones to trees will be provided. Bring a cutting tool/tin
snip for hardware cloth if you have one and a pair of pliers for
twisting wire. We will have one very sturdy ladder that will enable
reaching heights up to 20 feet but a couple of additional ladders would
expedite the installation.
2. Remove any invasive plants observed such as tamarisk and tree tobacco.
3. Cut lengths of mulefat and plant in the eroded channel to fill in
spots that did not grow from last years plantings.
A set of pruning clippers would be needed.
4. Install valve boxes for the six valves controlling the irrigation
system for the food plots including installing poles to mark the
location of the valve boxes.
Materials for the valve boxes and the poles will be provided.
Shovels and a pulaski will be helpful to dig out around the valves for
installation of he box. A saw for cutting the wood for the box and a tin
snip will also be used to prepare the box.
5. Remove the remaining barbed wire fence along the north side of
Hollenbeck Creek up to the trail from the Honey Springs parking lot.
A tee post puller and fence pliers will be provided.
6. Cut up two old rusted out metal tanks and load onto trailer for
removal.
A circular saw with a three or four good metal cutting wheels
will be needed. We will provide a generator to power the saws although
if you have a generator and would like to bring it that will help. The
trailer will be provided.
7. Cut up steel irrigation pipe already taken up and placed in a
central location into 5 foot lengths and load onto a trailer for removal
Again circular saws with metal cutting blades and a generator
are needed although if anyone has a cutting torch and is adept at
cutting, this would be an ideal application.
8. Dig 650 foot ditch for a water line from Honey Springs Parking Lot
to existing water pipe in preparation for installing faucet at the
parking lot.
Ditcher will be on site and pipe is also on site ready for
installation.
9. Cut lengths of willow and plant in the eroded channel and in the
Hollenbeck Creek channel.
Need a set of pruning clippers.
10. Extend one of the food plot irrigation lines to fit the new field
configuration in the southwest part of the plot, install riser and
irrigation sprinkler.
11. Cut pepper tree on roadside west of entrance to work site and
treat with Roundup to improve visibility west along 94
A chain saw is needed for this task which should not take more
than 30 minutes. We will have a chain saw on site but if one person can
bring a saw that would help.
12. Install heavy rebar supports for faucets on oak planting site.
Rebar cut to size will be provided along with electrical tape to
secure the faucets.
13. Everyone working will be given a trash bag and we should clean up
any trash of any kind that we find on site. There are pieces of plastic
from the old farming operation on the ground and some shotgun shells and
broken PVC pipe plus just regular trash that has accumulated in spots.
We need to clean up trash at the Highway 94 entrance.
14. Dig a ditch for water line to a relocated water trough on Honey
Springs side of the hill.
15. Inspect quail water source location and prepare plan for
installing water source.
16. One person will need to set up the lunch and cook the hamburgers.
Everything needed to cook the lunch - a grill and utensils and
the hamburger and buns and all the fixings will be provided
17. We have requested DFG to install additional dove roosts on the
north side of the fields. If they are able to complete drilling the
holes and delivering the telephone poles, we will install the poles.
18. Water the oaks and replant as needed.
