We were up in the June Lake area two weeks ago, but I just got around to uploading some pics today. The fishing was excellent! We limited out on several occassions and ended up bringing home 30 trout. Caught most on orange powerbait. Fished lots of lakes and caught fish at each one, Saddlebag & Grant Lake produced the best & biggest though. Here are a few pics...

I've been fishing the area my whole life and this year was one of the best. The only time that has it beat is the year my brother pulled a 4.5 pounder out of Saddlebag many, many years ago.

I've been fishing up in the E. Sierras my whole life also.
It"s to bad every year it gets more and more crowded.
Any more you have to go early in the season or late in the season to get away from the crowds.

Yes it wasn't too bad this time of year. Late summer, early fall is the best time to go up if you are not afraid of a little cold. We used to spend 3 weeks up there every late October early November when the deer season was at that time. We'd fish too and always had great success. You need to be in an RV or cabin at that time of year though due to the threat of snow and the frigid weather.

The saddest thing for me over the years is to watch how the development has hurt the deer herds. That and finding trash everywhere, even in the back country. Crowded fishing holes are annoying too. Never used to be like that, but I think all the local news coverage on ABC many years ago caused the area to became even more of a tourist stop then before.

I guess it wouldnt be so bad if it wasnt for all the idiots you come across that either try to fish roght on top or over you and when they leave they leave all their crap behind.
I just remember back in the day when it was less crowded and you never had to worry to much about where to fish because it was all good.
Dont get me wrong i still love going up there every year but i just do it before the crowds in may and after in sep, oct, nov.

My brother fished Mamie last Friday and caught and released several dozen fish. He kepted 5 fat ones to take home. He's done that two weeks in a row including a 4 pound Alper. Very few people around Mammoth last weekend. Best time of year.

nice pix...I have to agree with concrete...i've been really turned off by the crowds...there was a time when you could go up on a weekday and have it all to yourself...not anymore...just drove through truckee this weekend looks like the rivers are at good levels...may check it out this weekend...

aconcrete,

Just got back last night...had a great time!!! I ended up catching the largest trout out of our group of six campers. Stayed up at Mono Village (due to the CDF camp grounds being closed early this year). The fishing was pretty bleak the first two days (weird easterly winds, followed by calm afternoons seemed to be spooking the fish).

The browns were biting right at first light and the 'bows were hitting later in the morning. It seems copper/bronze spoons (with red in them) were the ticket just before the sun hit the water. Once the sun was up, nightcrawlers on a wind drifting boat were the winners. Trolling wasn't producing squat.

BTW, the trout I got was a 4lb 'bow. It sure is gonna taste good tonight!

Mmmm...butter and lemon with capers over lightly dusted fillets, pan fried in butter.

Of our group, the decent size fish were my 4lb 'bow, 3 1/2 lb 'bow, 3 lb 'bow and a 2 1/2 lb 'bow. All the browns were dinks.

Also, they just stocked the Upper twin on Friday a.m.. My buddy saw te truck pull up from his kayak. They planted mostly brood stock 'bows and browns (a lot of 2 and 3 lb fish). The planted on the west side, about 1/4 mile up from the marina.

Finally, for an early morning bite, the 'bows were hammering red powerbait, but only as it was retrieved in. I guess they just liked the color and movement. In fact the second morning, while walking back to camp, I stopped behind a tree and watched a big brown (3-4lbs) swim past a red petal of some sort and then come back and suck in down off the top of the water.

The fish were biting shallow (3-10 feet off the surface) and close. Lots of surface action. Had one hit off a hopper fly, just foating it off the top of the water.

Anyways, lots to clean up and put away. Hope all who had/have the chance can get up there before the season closes!

Cheers!

(I'll post pics when I get them back.)
