Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a bill to legalize same-sex marriage in California. The Governor said the bill contradicted a proposition passed by California voters in 2000; which said only marriages between a man and woman are valid.
A San Francisco judge has ruled that banning same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. However, Gov. Schwarzenegger noted that the case is currently being considered by a state appeals court and will likely be decided by the California Supreme Court. The Governor explained, "If the ban of same-sex marriage is unconstitutional this bill is not necessary. If the ban is constitutional this bill is ineffective."
