Ours is an older Compaq 100Mz Pentium and we've not had any troubles with it except sometimes I have to wiggle the plugs to make better contact. ###The plugs I'm talking about are on the Motherboard, where the Screen plugs into, not hard to get too and only happens maybe once a year.
The Recharge'le batt is now bad and at $125 it'll stay bad, too cheap to buy a new one. ###I bought a 12v to 110v Inverter for $40 and use it in the car. ###My wife uses it to enter Geneology Info off TombStones is all so no problems really.....
I forgot exactly when we got it but it's several years old now and we've been happy with it.

Passthru,
I just got a new Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 for work. So far it's working good. I had an older Toshiba Satellite Pro 115 I think it was and it worked good for heavy field use. IBM and Dell are known for their laptops. My first laptop was an older IBM and it performed well.
If you're goiing to be staring at the screen for long time periods, don't scrimp on screen size. ###
You might also want to consider a PDA which can run most laptop software.

If you want dependabilty go Compaq or HP. I have a Compaq and have beat the thing to hell and back and it still works great. They cant be beat. Customer service leaves a bit to be desired however.
I have a IBM Thinkpad and I love it. No problems at all. Had it for 8 months now. ###
