I am looking to get an air pistol. I live on an acre of ground in southern PA. I am tired of groundhogs, rabbits and the ocaissional rat and would like to pick them off with a pistol.

I would prefer a pistol over a rifle for size and storage. It would be easier to fetch when I am sitting on my back deck and decide it's time to vent my frustration at the rodent population.

In searching the net, I came across the following:

Crosman Air Pistol 1008 SBRD

Will this pistol have adequate power to kill my varments? Below are the features listed on a website. Does anyone have a recommendation of a dealer or another pistol? I'd like to stay in the under $100 price range.

Thanks! http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-gunfighter-yellow.gif

Your first post here? Welcome.

First, check your local laws. Some states allow air rifle hunting, but not air pistol.

Second, I doubt it has the power to do the job at any realistic range. My .177 spring air pistol will bounce the pellet off the skull of a cottontail at 10 feet. That is not fair to the cottontail. I do not have ballistics on it to compare to your pistol - which is why I express doubt and not certainty.

Thanks for the reply and the welcome. I really have no idea what the specs mean. Does anyone have a pistol to recommend?

This is the one I use, and love.
It's cheap too!

.22 cal @ 460 FPS

I'll second Machine's recommendation. On his advice I got the 2240 a year ago. Bagged a couple yard vermin (gophers) with it. Alot of fun punching paper also.

What about the Crosman 1377. It's pneumatic versus CO2, but it shoots .177 pellets and BB's at 600 fps versus 430 fps for the 1008. They are both within a couple of dollars of each other.

I wouldn't recommend the 1377 for small, fur bearing creatures. I've got one, and the 600fps they quote is a bit optomistic--its more around 500fps. Only if you do all the mods on it will it shoot in the 600fps range--but even then it would be marginal for ground hogs and rabbits.

I agree, the 2240 is THE gun to get for your purposes. Very moddable and accurate. I've got the "carbine" version, the 2250, and it is one sweet gun.

Yes, 2240 is the one!

Take a look Mac-1 website, They take the 2240 and hot rod it out!!!!!
I did the trigger on mine (Maybe a bit too much http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/afraid_face.gif )
But on alot of airguns it's hard to do things like that, if that's what your
into.

But no matter what, the 2240 is a great shooter, at a great price!

And the .22 cal. has more FPE then a .177....
