So you know anyone who can reload shells with a lesser charge? ###That's how I started with a 12 ga. at about that age. ###

As for the 20 guage, I am not sure. Sometimes because of the weight of the gun, they can kick as hard as a 12 ga. I think this would depend on how strong he is and can he physically handle the 12 guage.
If it is too heavy for him to handle you might have to go smaller.
If you do work up a lighter load for him, you should pattern it yourself to find the maximum distance you will be able to take a bird with it.
The reason I say for you to pattern it, you notice the recoil more than when you are having fun shooting clays or hunting.
I dont think this would be a good job for a youngster. When he gets his first bird however, I dont think he will even notice the recoil.
Let me know how things work out. ### ### ### ### ### ### ### ### ###Fubar

###Yeah im not hip on having him shoot a real kicker, but when the bird comes in it will not be a problem, the problem is getting him to be able to make shots before we get to the woods, light loads are what i need,im thinking that the 2 3/4 #8s with the improved choke might be ok(hardly a kick)for practise,i really want to get him started this year so i can get him hooked on hunting.
###I may take the butt plate off and add some lead for weight to reduce recoil some, ill be carrying the gun anyhow till we get set up.
