Family offers $25,000 reward to help solve killing of deer hunter

By Nancy Olson, Gannett Wisconsin Newspapers

The family of a Wausau native who was killed during deer hunting season is offering a $25,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for his death.

On Nov. 23, James R. Southworth of Medford was shot twice in the back while deer hunting on his family's private land in the town of Lynn, near the intersection of Maple Road and Fairhaven Avenue in Clark County.

"We are trying to do whatever we can to find out what happened," said Janet Southworth, James Southworth's sister-in-law. "We want to draw as much ... attention to it as we can."
The shooting victim's family and friends posted the reward.

Southworth's death is being investigated as a homicide by the Clark County Sheriff's Office. The department followed several leads before the family offered the reward.

Southworth went hunting alone toward the end of the nine-day deer hunting season. Rescuers found Southworth's body the next morning, but his rifle was never recovered.

He was wearing blaze orange when he was killed. Investigators reported the hunter's body was found about 200 yards from a tree stand in a brushy swampy area of dense vegetation.

Anyone who has information about the case is urged to call the Clark County Sheriff's Department at either 1-715-743-3157 or 1-800-743-2420.
Southworth was one of seven hunters killed during the nine-day deer hunt.
