Went up to Big Bear to do some wade bowfishing since my boat isn't registered yet. Got there about 2pm and the carp were in knee deep water. Yeee haw. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-dancin-red.gif
While I'm tying on a arrow 2 big ole boys come screaming into the turnout begging me to tell them where the carp were. They said they had driven all over and nothing. WIth no boat I told them to just wade on out. Offered them a knife to cut their jeans into shorts if they wanted but they just stood on the bank while I flung arrows 10 yards away. If it was me that drove all the way to Big Bear I would have waded out jeans and all to do some bowhfishing.
I must have flung 100 arrows my arms hurt so bad by 6 pm. THe angle is a lot different on the water then it is from higher up on a boat. Took me awhile to find the sweet spot to aim. I missed two toads that swam right by me, maybe 5 foot shoots http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-hitting-self.gif http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-hitting-self.gif One had a calico top, looked like part goldfish.
THe carp weren't really spawning, saw few groups on top pushing females, it was mostly a foot to three foot down shots. Lots of packs of 6 to 10 fish roving back and forth. You gotta stand real still and even then they spook a bit when you draw. Water was clear enough to see out 10 feet in most places. The guy who was using a ladder last week may have the ticket, get you up enough to not spook the fish as bad and better angle to shoot.
Had one AMS slide bumper on my Garpoon arrow come loose, just rethreaded it in the other side and glued the snot out of it. The Garpoon seemed to plane a bit when it hit the water, it was always high and right so once I adjusted for Kentucky windage the carp paid for it.
I stuck 12 carp. Biggest was close to 10 lb. One I'm not sure what happened, after the shot and clean miss this big female did a big back loop and started floating. It was a clean miss and this carp didn't have a mark on it that I could see. It floated out where I couldn't examine it but I'm wondering it the line garroted the fish and never got hit by the point.
The usual oxygen wasters showed up to ruin a good shoot. Hundreds of yards of shoreline with not a soul and this idjit and his wife decided he was going to teach kayak class right next to me. After watching all the carp take off for deeper water with all the splashing and paddle banging not 30 feet away from me I finally asked the jerk to move down the shore a bit. I was sitting on a carp runway and really didn't want to wade around to find another good spot.
Weather was perfect, 70 degrees and blue blue skies. The wind would pick up and then lay down. WHen it rippled the surface it was hard to see the carp but when it laid down it was perfect. MAke sure you take polarized sunglasses, it's the only way to see the carp in time to get ready for a shot.
Had lunch at the Cafe in Angeles Oaks on the way up. Again poor service there after last time when I left after no food and waiting 30 minutes. THis time the waitress never asked to refill the iced tea. It wasn't real busy. Great place to eat just the service sucks and it's the only place on the drive to stop on the backside of Hwy 38.
