I've got this old hunting knife in front of me. It's stamped "Edgebrand" and "Solingen" "Germany" on the tang just ahead of the hilt, which is brass. Model is 457. The handle is antler with a few leather washers at either end. the pommel is aluminum. The blade is about 5.25", stout and with the old fashioned "fuller" or blood groove like the old Marbles. In fact, it is very reminiscent of a Marble. We found it by accident in the bottom of an old tool bin in his old garage all crudded up, covered in gunk with some rust.

I cleaned it up and it appears to be a pretty decent grade of hunting knife. I love high carbon steel and this appears to be that. I cleaned it up and it's a very stout nice old style hunting knife and I was able to restore a really nice edge on it. Can anyone tell me when these knives were produced, what kind of steel is the blade and were they considered to be of decent quality?

For my two cents, I fell in love with this old blade and intend to talk my buddy out of it. It seems well made, heavy and stout. Kind of makes me feel the same way I do when I grab hold of that AC/43 1943 model Walther P-38 pistol I have up in the gun cabinet!

Thanks for any feed back.

I can not tell you anything much about who or when the knife was made. It does sound like a model that would have been made in the 50's or 60's with the blade fuller. Since it says "Solingen" it should be high carbon steel, possibly O-1 carbon steel. If it is O-1 steel, and if it was heat treated right, it should hold a very good sharp edge.

These knives were popular sellers in the seventies. Good, german-made high-carbon steel. I have small "trout and bird" model of the same design I use for some of the finer work in dressing and skinning deer and small game. I have not seen the brand for awhile now, I do not think there is current production.

I may be wrong on current production.
