I'm looking at a Mauser gew 98 Amberg 1917 chambered in .30-06. It doesn't look like the typical Mauser 98. It looks like a hunting bolt action rifle. The stock is old wood but looks good. I don't know much about Mauser rifles but am willing to learn.

The question: Did Mauser make the 98 in a hunting configuration or has this rifle been customized?

ps: the gun as a whole is in great condition and the sale price is $350.00. Good buy????

It may be a rebarreled 98 action. The 98 was built in sporting configs but 30-06 at that time was still a fairly new cartridge, so my bet you are looking at a rebarreled action. Does it have a roller coaster looking rear sight or....?

No the rear sight is a weird looking contraption made by Redfield.

My guess is it may be a rebarreled military action (there should be a spot on the left side of the reciever for your thumb when using stripper clips). Value is really hard to say. Is it a bent bolt handle, how is the bluing, etc.?
