We hunted the Griffins Nest Hunting Club in Niland yesterday. I haven’t hunted an upland club in many years, but this was a real good experience. My son Trevor had a blast. These birds flew much better than the DFG planted birds and they were huge. I was very surprised at what a challenge it was. The birds broke quick and high and we had a few get away from missed shots. Some of you Niland pheasant hunters may know Hollis Daker, without his pointers we would have had a real tough time. Thanks Hollis!
I would like to have a low budget “JHO Pheasant, Chuckar and Goose hunt” in the future (next month perhaps?). I asked the owner Jacob if we could have the Wister field to ourselves and he said absolutely! Griffins Nest has a field in Niland and a 140 acre field next to Wister. They planted Rye and some other goose food in the Wister field. This field should be perfect for 15 to 20 hunters (safely). Bring the dog and the JR hunters.
We could set up for geese in the morning and hunt pheasants and chucker after that. He has an area for a JHO BBQ as well.
If anyone is interested, post up and let’s settle on a date.

Good question. I would think 8 or so at a time. I'll give him a call and find out. I'm not sure how he manages a 20-gun hunt, but I’m sure he does a heck of a job.
He said the reason he started the club is he got tired of sharing DFG fields with 250 guns on 100 acres peppering each other and such.
Jacob said to keep it safe, especially around JR hunters, we can have no more than 20 hunters on the 140-acre property. We hunted the Niland property today by ourselves (two hunters) and it's 100 acres. It would have been nice to have 8 or 10 more guys there to nab the ones that got away.
They have a 6 bird per gun minimum (Pheasants, Chuckar or a mixed bag). The Pheasants are $25 each and the Chuckar are $15 (The Goose Hunt is Included for us!). We could get 3 of each or all pheasants, etc, and it would be fair to all. Total cost would be $120 per gun or $150 for all pheasants or $90 for all chucker. That’s a fair price for what we get (Goose, Quail, Dove, Pheasants, Chuckar and JHO brothers). Keep in mind, you may bag more or less than you buy.
Thonzberry,
Good idea! If we get enough interest, I’ll move it to the events area.
I was thinking, we should also get some rooms reserved at the “Pink Hotel” AKA Calapatra Inn (sp) or the “Dive in Niland”.
If anyone has special needs or questions, you can e-mail Jacob at tinmanufo@yahoo.com PH# (760) 344-4170

I'd like to add my friend Tom to the list. He'd like to come and should be able to.
Also, should we bring waders, or other parafanalia for the goose shoot in the morning? Or are we going to spread out in blinds and take shots on passing birds?
Also, what is a good steel shot size for geese? #2? Should the goose hunting be pretty good or hit or miss? I am kinda more excited about the chance to shoot a goose than pheasant or chuckar.
Also, how much should you lead a goose? And the range limit on shots would probably be 40 yards I would imagine?
Thanks

Bill,
You don’t need waders. I don’t know how the Goose hunt will be. I haven’t seen or hunted the field near Wister.
#2 or BB should work fine. I would guess hit or miss since I don’t know much about the property. I’m not expecting much, however, Jacob said the rye and other food should be ready in a few weeks. I’ll call him and get some more info.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>

IMO, most people don’t lead enough on pass shots. They seem closer than they really are and fly faster than it looks. I like to shoot as they’re landing in the spread. I use 40 yards as a rule. I’ve seen em whacked much higher, but chances are you’ll just hurt em.

I spoke to the owner, Jacob, and he said the Planted Goose field is only 8 acres. It’s next to Wister and has not been hunted, which is a plus. With lots of dekes and some good calling, we may entice some wary Snows or even Honkers. In my opinion, with 8 acres, there will be enough area for a couple blinds (4 to a blind). My son and I will not Goose hunt. We’re going for the Pheasants. We can alternate the goose hunt so everyone that wants to can get a shot at it. The geese seem to start flying in that area at 8:00am. They will fly for a few hours and then pick up again in the afternoon.
Keep in mind the Goose hunt is an extra to the upland hunt and the main event is definitely the Pheasant hunt and the BBQ.
Mrs. Superduty,
You can pay Jacob when we all arrive in the hunting area. (edit) The BBQ (Lunch) will be on the hunting property and it will be a potluck. This will give PaulC a chance to make room in his freezers.
I’m staying at the Calipatria Inn (do a search on the “Pink Hotel” it’s a great place) and they have a couple BBQ’s plus I’m bringing one as well. If you have a portable BBQ, please bring it.
I will arrive at the Pink Hotel around 4pm Friday and start burning meat for the at 6:00. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-2drunks-singing.gif They have a Steak House, but once you try my Tri-Tip you won’t dare… http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-cool-shades-down.gif

Pitdog, we don't have any deeks to offer but if given the opportunity would love to try to get a shot at a goose. I have a single shot 10gauge that would just love to reach out and touch one. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-devil.gif
As for the dogs, we have two GSP's going with us. Mine is 12yrs old and doesn't have the legs she used to but still has the nose and desire. She pointed pheasant well for us Sat. and never gave up going to bed with dinner and a cheese wraped Advil that night. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbs-up-ani.gif Mrs. S's GSP is alittle over one year old and is learning the ropes. She doesn't have allot of experience under her belt but she did a great job on Sat. as well pointing on 5 or 6 birds.
We have acouple hurdles to still overcome to make this a funner trip being the wife works Friday and doesn't get off untill around 10:30PM in Torance. We need to do something about that. It's also our wedding aniversary on Jan. 8th so this should be interesting. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-cool-shades-down.gif The other is my sister is still trying to hook us up with a heritage pheasant hunt on that date which means if the Mrs. can't get off from work would make it a shorter drive to hunt and free birds. What would you do? http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-bag-on-head.gif I'm shooting for her getting the day off and partying with some fellow JHO'ers. Thonzberry,
You and your son will be missed. My boy was looking forward to another buddy.
OK here’s the latest:
I spoke to Jacob today and he said the property is on the corner of Gillespie and English. If your familiar with Wister Gillespie is what Davis road turns into at the 111. So you turn left on Gillespie instead of right on Davis (I’m sure I could have said that better, but the cold medicine is clogging my brain).
The other property is a couple miles south, in Niland, but we will all meet at the above area.
We can get 8 Goose hunters (at a time) in that field safely. They will need dekes. We can meet there Friday evening and set up the spread.
The folks who plan to hunt upland in the morning can use the other field so we don’t disturb the goose hunt. We can then alternate between upland hunting and goose hunting. This is just an idea. Please let me know if you have a brainstorm.
There’s a camping area in the field. They will have a restroom and a BBQ. So if you don’t plan on staying at the Calipatria Inn this may be the ticket. Wister is just down the road a mile so we can visit Max and have some grub.
Whoever is interested, I'm going to do a Coyote / Bobcat hunt Sat night.
There still is room for more so let us if you’re in.

I've being talking to Steve about the up coming event we have two fields one next to wister just across the railroad tracks which is 167 acres and the other 114 acres just about 1 mile on the wilkins turn off.
Steve will organize those who will be hunting the field next to wister off Gallespie rd and the number count and I will need a count for the morning pheasant hunt.
socalcowboy you can camp at either of the two fields Griffins Nest has, next year I'm hoping to add an additional 87 acres to Griffins Nest.

I just returned from Wister and took a look at the property. It’s perfect! Close to a mile long and close to 500 yards across. The cover is mixed, some dense and some sparse. FForF (Michael) and I saw a nice covey of quail running around the southwest area and I’m sure the rest of the field is loaded. There are canals/ditches on both (long) sides of the field and a campground on the NW corner. I saw the owner (Jacob) there and he was prepping the campground. There are a couple of shade trees in the campground. And it’s all very level.
There doesn’t seem to be a chance at Geese, so if you were going mainly for the goose hunt, you will be very disappointed.
We will need to BRING TABLES for the BBQ’s. First BBQ is Friday night and the second will be when the hunt is over. There is no need to wake up super early unless you want to go varmint hunt in the morning. I’m going to bring some sausage for breakfast. If a few others want to bring eggs, OJ, beacon, etc… That would be great. Whoever gets there early on Friday, we will do some skeet for practice (we can do that Sat as well).
Jesse has generously donated some T-shirts, Hats and such for a give away raffle… Thanks Jesse!
I shot one coyote Friday a few miles from the field and today I got a shot at one and missed. Saturday we were at Arise’s Duck club (which is a quarter mile from the field) and heard two different packs calling w/in 10 minutes. I think they were attracted to ESSposse’s scent, but can’t be sure.

Bluedoe, you’re in. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-faces-toast-beers.gif
I don’t see a problem with a 26’ trailer. Don’t try to turn into the property one mile up Gillespie. There’s a better road if you circle around the backside off English. If anyone has a large trailer or motor home, you will have to take Gillespie two miles up to English Rd (TL) go up English about a ¼ mile to a dirt road (Winslow Rd) and turn left again. Then you go down the dirt road about a mile and the camp will be on your left. Basically you’re driving around the property.
Directions to the Griffins Nest Club:
Take I-10 east, past Indio to the S-86 (near the Trump 29 Casino). Take the 86 to the 111 south. go down the 111 (about 35 miles) and turn left on Gillespie Rd (the turn off is 10’ before The Wister refuge and 3 miles before Niland). Drive over the tracks and go 1 mile up Gillespie and turn left, go over the ditch (dirt road) and drive along the fence line about 500 yards. The camp will be on your right.

I just checked the Accuweather report for Niland and they are currently having a “light rain”. They expect .33” of rain today, .16” tomorrow, Wed and Thurs no rain and a chance of light rain on Friday. They expect wind on Friday so if you plan to camp, have a back-up (ie Calipatria Inn) just in case your tent doesn’t make it (been there).
The soil in the camp area is a sandy / gravel type and Mud shouldn’t be a concern. I will get the full scoop from Jacob on Thursday.

If you’re concerned about the weather, you should reserve a room at the Calipatria Inn. (800) 830-1113. If you have AAA, you can get a room for $62 including tax. Hot Jacuzzi, Suites, a Steakhouse and Essposse and Arise for some late night entertainment. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-faces-toast-beers.gif

ESSposse will begin the entertainment at 7:00p.m. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/afraid_face.gif The show is free and tipping is optional.
We can start the Pheasant hunt Sat morning whenever y’all want. 8:00 would give us time for breakfast, but that’s your call.

How many kids are going?? I see that you are bringing your son Pitdog, I talk to ESSposse on e-mail and he is bringing his Son, do you know of any others??
Reason way I am asking is, I am bring my whole family down, and did not know if this was a boy’s trip. I do not what to offend any one by brings my Wife and kids by to meet every one??? I have two girls 11 and 12 & they are bringing one girlfriend a peace, my wife and my son, (he is 1 1/2 years old).
I do not want to put anyone out, buy bringing the girls. (I now of some guys that get offended if anyone brings there wife or there daughters and I just don't what to step on any toes.
I have gone to grate lengths to bring my family up in the out doors. They love to Hunt, Fish and camp. So I take them on most of my weekend trips
I am not offended if this is a boy’s trip, we can meet up some other time.
So let me know, I am leaving Thursday night, so I can watch the birds fly Friday morning. So I can pick a good hunting spot for Saturday and Sunday.

If anyone is concerned about the order and safety of the hunt, the owner "Jacob" is a professional and has our safety in mind as his #1 concern! His #1 concern.
He started this club because of the public rat race. He told me we will use both properties and there will be an order to how he plants the birds and how we hunt them. We may hunt in 2 waves making sure there is no crossfire potential.
He will make sure we are safe first and accommodate any special requests second. I wouldn't think of taking Trevor (my 8yr old son) on his first real hunt if I didn't have 100% faith in Jacob. This will be organized and safe.
There will be several employees planting birds and there will be rules of play. The 167 acre field can accommodate about 20 hunters (1 mile long and about 500yrds wide) and the other field is 117 acres and I hunted it and know could handle at least 12 hunters. The Jr hunters will probably have a special hunt if requested. One or two at a time (with adult supervision). In an area that is less dense so they get a better chance at the bird.
Jacob will be there Friday night to go over the plan. He does lots of large group hunts. I will guarantee you this hunt will be fun and orderly.... and most important, Safe.
pitdog
01-05-2005, 10:40 PM
Oh yah...Absolutely NO Alcohol consumption until the hunt is completely over... Sorry Ess.
All hunters must possess a valid CA Hunting license.
Blaze orange is a must ( if you don't have any, I will have extra as well as others... let us know). You will not need any more than 7 1/2 shot. 6 shot should be a good 3rd shell back-up.
Lets make this a great time. If you get your 6 birds and you are in the first wave of hunters, best practice would be to stop and let the others have a chance. After everyone has run their birds, the field will be open.
I know I'm preaching to the chior, but I thought y'all would like to know this will be civil and fun.
Let's have a Blast http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-dancin-red.gif http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-dancin-red.gif http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-dancin-red.gif
