well gang,

the archery season is open and i am off saturday to scout. ###i have been drawn for a hunt at Mahannah WMA, ###it is 16,000 acres just north of Vicksburg MS.

they draw names for 3 day hunts and limit it to 50 hunters per day, i get to go sunday - tuesday. ###i will be sleeping under the stars and hunting all day long. ###they have been heavily managed for about 8 years now and this is the first year you can take a buck without taking a doe first. ###i will probably carry my nikon saturday since i cant hunt till sunday. ###they have a few wild hogs that you can take as well but i have never seen any there. ###wish me luck, i'll give a report next week.

im back

i did shoot at a large doe sunday morning from about 35 yds. ###she was hit but the arrow stuck in her body lengthwise (head on shot). ###she immediately ran into about a 300 acre patch of ragweed.. ###i searched for over 3 hours but with no bloodtrail to follow it was useless. ###i feel just aweful, this was the first deer i've lost since 1987. ###and the first one ever with a bow. ###to top it all off the search through the ragweed...(over 7 feet tall by the way) ###set off my allergies, eyes the next morning swollen shut. ###and i had to call off the rest of my trip.

maybe next time

Sorry about the lost there bigman.

Head on shot?? ###Not a good shot to take there BM. ###Take only broadside or quarting away shot with a bow.

I'll be leaving thursday for WV for two days of hunting then heading north to MI for another 2-3 days. I hope those northern turkeys speak a little southern as well! Great scouting reports coming in from the landowners in both places and we will be the first to hunt the birds in both places so this should be fun. Gotta call one in for my dad before I'll shoot, but if he gets one it will make my trip! I'll check back in with y'all next thursday for the update, take care.

Ok, here's how it went. friday we launched out of shelter Island and put the jigs in at the 390 put out my homemade daisy chain, a mean joe green burns six shooter, b/p jethead and a zucchinni . Trolled to within 4 miles of the 1010 trench for absolutely nothing. Plus we got the swell kicked the crap out of us in a 26 foot boat. I lost my teammates to seasickness. Heard on the radio the 390 started to bite well later in the day. First telltale problema was that the auto- bilge switch kept coming on once in awhile. Had to head to the Marina Coral for the team captains meeting. Decided to forego the long uphill run for the tuna and concentrate on the good local yellowtail fishing. Sat morning I head for the bait reciever and within 10 minutes of turning on the bait pump the bilge alarm sounds. I lift the hatch and see water flooding the engine compartment. Mind you this is a brand new dealer demo boat loaned to us for the tourney. I turn off the bait pump and as the water level gets below the overflow outlet the water stops draining into the bilge. So we fish without live bait. At the start of the tourney I head for Todos Santos Island and we are gonna fish with Rapala's and slow troll swimbaits. Course they only wanted live bait that day and the guys with Dines were hooked up all time. Then an hour into this I lose my crew to seasickness again for the rest of the day and I wind up single handing the boat and manning the trolling lines all day by myself. They kept a steady chum line going, lol. If anyone is headed for Ensenada the yellows are biting well in front of the lighthouse on Todos Santos Island and its an excellent grade of fish. My friend in another boat busted 3 off on 40lb test. Anyhoo we wound up the 2 barracuda and 3 ling cod. The white seabass also made a brief appearance also. We got up at 4:30am and ran back to San Diego, cleared customs and drove home. I'm taking MY boat from now on. Wish me luck I'll be fishing a Calico Bass tourney up in the Channel Islands in a few weeks. In MY boat.
