My brother used to run dogs for coons in Southern Missouri. He didn't have dogs, he just went with friends, but I never went.
I have spent many nights sittting on a riverbank catfishing and listening to dogs baying as they chased the sent. Plenty of folks from Northern Arkansas and So Mo. run dogs.

HEY stranger!!!!!! http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-wave-hello-yellow.gif

Reckon you know what I hunt! http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-wnk-yellow.gif I can't believe you haven't gotten more responses to this!

Small game hunting is an awesome way to get kids started hunting, especially with dogs!

Walk around the woods, laugh and talk, watch some good dogs work, do some fast paced shooting... now THAT'S fun! http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley_10sign.gif

Or... sit on a deer stand for hours... be totally still... totally quiet... freeze your butt off... and *maybe* see a deer... http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-shakehead-blue.gif

it's no wonder so many kids would rather sit on the couch and play video games than hunt... http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-rolleyes-green.gif

ummm.....do the 5 coons a week I trap in my yard count? Actually, I do squirrel hunt quite a bit. But mostly just to keep me busy in between spotting rabbits.

Probably the reason there aren't so many replies is because here in Calif, where an awful lot of us are from, practically no one coon hunts. I don't know why - maybe becuase they're holed up during the day. Some tree squirrel hunt but there aren't that many places with trees that you can hunt. Most of the huntable land looks something like this: http://www.extractionpoint.com/~caad4/sunday5.jpg The world of jackrabbits and coyotes (and let's not forget road runnners - beep beep)

Hey, thats a picture I took last year! That was Carizzo, my old stomping grounds. I never had much luck out there in terms of quail, but I had the rabbits locked down. Coming from Santa Barbara, I'd first stop off along the 33 after Ojai and hit the mountain quail. Then hunt Carizzo for rabbit. Finally finish up in Maricopa, 20 minutes away for dove. Since moving up to the Bay area I haven't hunted hardly at all and haven't been to Carizzo in over a year. I miss those days. I need plan a trip down there soon. Sorry for the trip down memory lane.

To get back on topic, there ARE some spots for squirrel, just not in southern California. Even though the Los Padres holds a good number of them, I believe there isn't an open season. Two years ago they printed in the F&G handbook that Santa Barbara county was included and I took a couple nice grays. Later I found out it was a misprint.

Hmmm... I can see where a lack of trees could create a problem.

We have the opposite problem here in the deep south.. woods so thick you have to fight your way through them.

Well, if any of you ever get the chance to squirrel hunt with dogs, GO! It's a hoot!! :D

Here's a pic of an early morning Mississippi squirrel hunt for y'all... ;)

P.S. jephs422... trash can coons do not count http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-wnk-yellow.gif

Yes, that's your pic of Carrizo. I enjoyed your post last year. The Los Padres extends into SLO county too, and there are plenty of grays up there. Never looked into the season, tho. Saw a few this year in the Tehachape area, but private land. That area seemed kinda blue neck, someplace us red necks should steer clear of.

Chery:
Now that's some great looking huntin' country. Reminds me of my younger days in the Ozarks. What kind of game birds you have there?

Jeff-

I suspect that by 'game birds' you may be referring to flushing birds like quail and pheasant... but I'll answer in the broader sense (birds commonly hunted). http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-wnk-yellow.gif

Turkey are very numerous in Mississippi and are probably the most popular game animal here besides whitetail deer. Dove hunts are still very popular --the opening day of dove season is a traditional way to fellowship and celebrate the beginning of the fall hunting season. Duck and goose hunting is popular, especially along the Mississippi (River) flyway. Our quail are nearly gone now that small acreage farming is dead although I occasionally see a few. More and more farmland is being developed, or converted to pine plantations, or allowed to revert to natural forest for hunting leases. So, we don't have much in the way of flushing birds except on private land that is specifically managed for this.

Squirrel hunting with dogs is actually similar to what quail or pheasant hunting with dogs must be like. Generally several hunters go together, walk and talk and watch the dogs work and shoot out game when located by the dogs. It's a lot of fun!

Here in the pee dee region of sc, we do a lot of squirrel hunting, especially after deer season. It fills in the gap until turkey season in April.

I've been lucky enought to have coon, bear, rabbit, and coyote hunted with hounds and of course fowl and birds.
But, the closest I came to hunting squirels with dogs was when I took care of a couple of my old bosses squirel dogs, I'm not even sure of the breed - but they were nuclear powered little buggers for sure... I made the mistake of taking them for a walk out into the woods ( a woods loaded with grey squirels). Pretty much had to recapture the both of them and carry them back to the farm.
Yep walked them out to the woods and carried them back... I would have loved to have had a gun that day, those dogs were pretty upset.... all that work and no meat!

People just don't know what they are missing, watching a good dog work a cold trail, opening up on a hot one, or running a good sight chase. It is something to be appreciated!!!!!!! http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbs-up-ani.gif

I have been known to knock a few out. I think the count this season so for is 202. And the best is yet to come.

Good to see some familiar names here. I just found this site. Looks interesting.

Here is a picture of my ole Mountain Cur, Chip. He sorta-kinda likes squirrels himself.

Dang what where you using shotgun .22 details details

We mostly use a 20ga. shotgun. The dogs tree on the tree that the squirrel is in. You pull the vine in the tree and the squirrel takes off running. You shoot on the run mostly. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-shootin-green.gif

Jeff,
That was a super hunt. You don't do that well every time.
