THIRD ANNUAL DEAD CREEK WILDLIFE DAY IS OCTOBER 2

WATERBURY, VT -- The Champlain Valley's largest celebration of wildlife takes place on Saturday, October 2, at the Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA) on Route 17 in Addison, just west of Route 22A. The day features over 35 events for anyone interested in wildlife viewing, hunting, fishing or learning about Vermont's natural heritage.

Activities begin at 9:00 a.m. with a boat trip leaving Basin Harbor to cruise up Otter Creek. The Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area comes alive with events beginning at 9:30 a.m. and continues nonstop until 4:30 p.m. Field trips, illustrated talks, wildlife viewing by canoe, live raptors, hunting and fishing tips, wildlife identification, and hunting dog handling are some of the fun activities planned. All events are free except the boat trips.

The Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area headquarters will have wildlife-related exhibits under two large tents. A kids' table offers fun craft activities, like building bluebird nest boxes, and lunch will be available to benefit the Addison parent teacher organization. A free shuttle bus will provide regular access to nearby field events throughout the day.

Field events focus on fish identification, wetland mammals, grassland birds, bird-banding, birding by canoe, Vermont bats and turtles, invasive exotic species and the clayplain forest natural community. Other activities include waterfowl rocket netting, decoy and blind sets, bluebirds, and bald eagles.

Otter Creek Audubon introduces The Big Sit, a day-long tally of birds seen or heard from a small circle on the shore of the West Branch reservoir. Volunteer observers for any length of time are welcome.

The day's events conclude with a nighttime adventure of owl netting and banding, scheduled for 7 p.m.

"This is our third year celebrating wildlife at Dead Creek and we think it will be the best so far," said Dave Sausville, manager of the Vermont Fish & Wildlife's Dead Creek WMA. "We have lots of great events scheduled and there's the added bonus of seeing hundreds of snow and Canada geese overhead as they head south for the winter."

For more information and to pre-register for the boat trips, $5.00 per person, please call 802-241-3700. More information also can be found on the website: www.vtfishandwildlife.com and clicking on Calendar of Events.
