What, they must not have sold enough adventure passes to pay the rent(LOL). Seriously, are they claiming fire danger because you know all hunters use tracer and incidiary bullets.

Subject: Forest Restrictions and Closure
Chiefs:
The Angeles National Forest is raising the fire danger level from "Very
High" to "Extreme", and will implement a forest closure order on
September
27, 2004.
Public safety is the compelling reason behind these actions due to
severe
weather and fuels conditions and catastrophic fire potential.
The forest has added five additional fire patrol units, and a task force
to
augment initial attack.
1 Task Force Leader
5 Type 3 Engines
2 Type 1 Water Tenders
2 Type 1 Hand Crews
Please forward as appropriate.

this is what they do to cover there 6. they close the forest and say we toldthem so when there is a fire they have someone toblame after it burns 300000 acres like a careless hunter who is setting signal fires, good time to be had by all except those not allowed
The Cleveland!? That's a surprise.
What about the San Bernardino? They are generally the first out of the gates.

I just got off the phone with Cleveland. No access restrictions for us bow hunters yet. At the Extreme level there are no allowed open fires and no OHV activity allowed. If it goes to Critical, we're screwed.

I searched the net and couldn't find anything in regards to a possible closure. Just because its not posted anywhere, doesn't mean it ain't gonna happen. If they do close D-11, i bet my hunting spot will be crawling with a 100+ hunters... http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-far-sdie-guy-yellin.gif

Thats a bunch of crap......They have had parts of the Angeles forest closed that I use to hunt for a few years due to rehabilitation....When will they ever reopen the forest....Why do they wait so close to hunting season to close the areas too? After alot of scouting trips and spending money on tags, adventure passes, etc.....All wasted time and money......Makes me really ill....... http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-far-sdie-guy-yellin.gif http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/lame-sign.gif

They do this kind of crap on purpose. Its the Anti's behind the scenes. They think its funny to close our forest 2 weeks before the opener. What a bunch of bulls$#@!!!!! http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-gunfighter-yellow.gif
Unless I missed something I did not see mention of a forest closure on the Angeles site. As for the Extreme Fire Condition, whats new about that? Every time I have gone out this year it has said the conditions are extreme.
Does the fire in Yucaipa have anything to do with this?

No your right Jake, its not on there. So that leaves me with some hope that it might be closed. Then again. they'll probably post it the day it closes. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-soapbox.gif
It makes me happy that I decided to bow hunt.
It just sucks because my son won't have a deer season AGAIN this year.
I guess I need to get him to buy a bow too.

Pray for rain, Pray for rain.... not a gully washer, but some good steady rain for a week or so

This seems to a developing pattern the last few years for USFS in D11,D14 zones. I'm personally tired of not being able to hunt in my zone.
I propose DFG move the deer season till after the first substantial rain or allow access to hunters only or something. At this rate, So. Cal DFG funds are going to take a substantial hit.
Can't wait to retire and move outta here. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/two-cents.gif
Well, there it was this morning on the front page of the Daily News Santa Clarita edition. Angeles Forest closed until we get a substantial amount of rain. What is substantial??
It just seems like odd timing to me. They didnt know it was extremely dry a month ago?
And of course DFG said that since Archery season has started there will be no tag refunds.

"Substantial" rain usually means 1" of rain or steady rain for 1 week.

http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-far-sdie-guy-yellin.gif So i'm assuming Azusa Canyon will be open? But will it be open for hunting is the question!! http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbs-down-little.gif
Roughly 80% of the Angeles’ 680,000 acres will be affected on Monday, with the exception of several popular recreation areas including Pyramid Lake, most of San Gabriel Canyon and the Mount Baldy area in San Antonio Canyon. These areas are within close proximity of a paved state or county highway with two ways out for possible evacuation purposes or because of favorable vegetation conditions.

Maybe we could start a class action suit against the DFG and make them open it up. It wouldn't be hard to prove a pattern of discrimination against hunters.
Dave
I stopped Friday at the Idllywild ranger station and got this from the horses mouth.
SBNF officials are meeting TODAY to determine the current fire status. If a decsision is made to close the forest, they are supposed to give us a week notice AND post it on their website (won't happen)
He gave me a very clear indicator that the will probably jump from VERY HIGH to CRITICAL and bypass EXTREME because there are too many loopholes in EXTREME. By going directly to CRITICAL they can close the whole forest down with no exceptions having to be made.
I'm blown away by the fact that the Angeles closed before the SBNF, and because the Angeles closed, I foresee no way that the SBNF will not close Moday Oct. 4th.. (provided they stick to their week notification)
If you have a tag for SBNF you'd better make it a point to hunt this weekend (opening rifle for D-19) because that will probably be your only chance to hunt.
I have spent all week (except Thursday) tromping around. I have recovered two fire hoses left behind and turned them into Cranston Station. I have been in the forest when it was 100x more crunchy than it is right now. If they close the forest I will be of the opinion that it is nothing more than a knee jerk reaction to 1000's of hunters invading the forest with FIREarms.
BTW:
The adventure pass got a stay of execution until Dec. 05.

I've pondered that very same idea the past few years. Not really sure of the logistics or effort involved in a move like that but, a pattern seems to be developing as of late with the San Bernardino, Cleveland and Angeles National Forests.
It seems ridiculous to me that the fire danger always manages to increase to the point of complete forest closure right before the rifle season opens. As the "Church Lady" from SNL would say "How Conveeeeeenient"
Now that the Adventure Passes & Zone Tags have been purchased and several scouting trips have been made in preparation for a better chance of success we hunters must sit back, twiddle our thumbs and hope they open the forest before our window of opportunity closes.
It would be nice to see the USFS and the California DFG put forth more effort in working together to resolve this growing problem.
Just for the record: In the past when we were given the opportunity for a "Tag Refund" because of the fire closure I chose to take the hit and let DFG keep the fees. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-rant-mode.gif

Unfortunately, the DFG really has no say so when it comes to Forest closures. It is in the hands of the USFS who, (and someone correct me if I'm wrong) seem a bit reluctant to consider the opinion of DFG in their decision making process.
WM1,
I would say that you are correct, based on my conversations w/DFG. These closures impact there stream of revenue.
If we continue to have these closures I'm sure that I wont be the only one to look at other states for hunting deer rather than spend my $$ in CA and deal with this crap.
IMHO the USFS should refund the cost of the Forest Adventure Pass to those that have purchased them.
