What kind of deer roam the D7 area? I have seen people post D7 information in the blacktail forum as well as the Muley Deer forum. I have people tell me the deer up there are a cross between a blacktail and a muley. I have heard people call them "California Muley", even heard people call them "Granite Bucks". Now can anyone tell me what is the offical species of deer that are up there.

It depends on who's "officiating"... the record books (CBH, P&Y, and B&C) call all the deer in D7 "mule deer". There is no California mule deer vs. Rocky Mountain mule deer discrimination, and I've never heard of a "granite buck".
At the lower elevations along the western boundary of D7 (and all the other D zones), there is likely intermixing with Columbian blacktails, but you'll need a wildlife geneticist and not "he said - she said" anecdotes to sort that out. There may even be a few pure strain blacktails running about, but if you kill one of them, no matter how closely it's appearence matches that of a textbook blacktail, it will still go into the books as a mule deer and not a blacktail because the book species are defined by geography and not by genetics.

theres both mule deer and blacktail. or at least what we central kalifs call blacktail. from what i've understood the granite buck is just a term used for a blacktail in the granite??????????? http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-bowdown-purple.gif

rlwright - I was hunting around 8000 foot level. Typically these bucks stay a little higher, but cold weather forced him down for a couple of days.
CaliJeephuntr - Good luck with the last weekend of A Zone, your probably be doing the FHL thing. We will most likely finish the season up with a couple of local hunts. Next year you'll have to come up to D7 with us.

Congrats http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-faces-toast-beers.gif Thats a damn nice buck anywhere in this state. As far as California Dept. Fish and Game goes that is a California Mule Deer. I believe all of the upper elevations of the west slope are considered the same. Someone else also posted that the lower elevation bucks are black tails. I would agree with this and there are some fine blacktails at the lower elevations. However there usually in someones front yard. Once again awesome buck.

Nice!!..lets see the California Tail markings? Should be a bit different then the slightly more North Rocky Mountain Mule Deer. The Black should be sort of spade shaped and/or slightly continual all the way up... The Blacktail pretty much range the Western slope of the Sierra all the way to the coast in the central parts of Ca. They actually do go all the way up and over East in many places but down south the tops and everything East belongs to the two main Muley species. Dfg has maps that have all the species mixing like a big melting pot. It shows the Ca mulies making it all the way to about Tahoe.

Hello,
Here is a link to a DFG deer hunting PDF file. One of the pages has a map that shows the ranges of the various Deer species and sub species, such as the burro deer, CA. Mule deer, Inyo mule deer, ETC. Also shows overlap areas. But I cant vouch for the accuracy, You will have to leave that up to the DFG biologists.
Enjoy

I spent a week up in C1 about 20 miles NE of Weed. All of the deer I seen up there (7k-8k ft) were definitely blacktail if you went by tail marking/coloration, solid balck.. According to the map, it fits right in there, because a few of the bucks my ncles have taken were definitely Rocky Mt..
Congrats on buck... http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-faces-toast-beers.gif
