As many of you know, the houndhunting community of California was threatened in 2003 by a legislative effort to bring about the demise of this integral part of the history and heritage of this nation. Authored by Assemblymember Paul Koretz (D-W. Hollywood), AB342 sought to prohibit the use of dogs for the taking of mammals in California. Though the bill was later amended to restrict the use of dogs for the taking of bear and bobcat only, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and Assemblymember Koretz were soundly defeated by a coalition of sporting groups from a diverse background.

Assemblymember Koretz vowed to renew his efforts and alluded to a possible initiative for the election in 2006. Additionally, the newly-elected CEO of the HSUS, Wayne Pacelle, will be eager to make his mark and craft his legacy by presiding of the nation's most powerful anti-hunting organization at the time houndhunting in the Golden State fell. Currently, the HSUS is focusing its efforts on the State of Maine and has sponsored an initiative that would ban the use of hounds and bait for the taking of bear. Though both the Governor and the state's wildlife management agency are staunchly opposed, the HSUS seems to believe that it best knows how to manage our natural resources. CHC has recently made a $10,000 contribution to our fellow hunters in Maine and would like to not only recoup that money, but bolster our warchest for the battle that is sure to come in the near future.

In the spirit of solidarity and in recognition of the critical need to come together in order to defend our common passion for hunting, I would like to invite each and every one of you to a fundraising banquet and auction being jointly hosted by the California Houndsmen for Conservation (CHC) and California Sportsman's Lobby (CSL) on Friday, August 20, 2004 in Ripon, California.

Cocktails and fellowship begin at 5:30 pm followed by an excellent Tri-Tip and Chicken Buffet at 7:00 pm catered by the House of Beef. The raffle and auction will begin soon thereafter. Along with the typical items such as firearms, art and hunting equipment, there will be several opportunities for guided bear, goose and lion hunts at various locations in California and other western states.

The banquet and auction will be held at the Ripon Community Center. The Community Center is located on the corner of South Locust and Fourth Street off of Highway 99. Tickets are just $40 and all proceeds will be directed towards the fight for the future of hunting.

Whether or not you own hounds now or plan to in the future, if you support the logical management of wildlife by trained professionals and condemn the attempts of the anti-hunting community to hijack the legal means by which our natural resources are currently managed, please make an effort to attend this important and festive event. Many JHO members I know who do not own hounds, but support my passion for doing so will be attending, and I hope that you might consider joining us as well.
