I found an old book called "The Hunters Encyclopedia". Theres a chapter on skinning and tanning a hide and one of the ingredients for the tanning solution is Alum.
What's Alum and where do you get it? ###

Alum is a powder used as a coagulent. Used to be available in your local drug store to stop the bleeding on shaving nicks. I haven't seen it in years. Haven't needed it since the advent of the double bladed safety razor.
I still have about an ounce left in a two ounce jar I bought back in the sixties!

It's the stuff that Tweety Bird feeds Sylvester so that his mouth shrinks up so much that he can't get Tweety in his mouth to eat him when he finally catches him.
The whole shaving coagulant thing is an old wifes tale. ###It just stings so badly when you put it on a cut that it scares the blood right back inside your body.

Alum also used to be used when making pickles. ###It can still be purchased at certain spice stores.
