I am soon to be a land owner and wanted to ask for advice on food plots for deer and turkey. My brother and I signed a contract today on 280 acres in NW Missouri that has 5 ponds and is in a whole bunch of CRP. We’ve hunted there for years and have seen lots of deer and turkeys but would like to improve the numbers and help those bucks to grow into monsters.

I’ve seen lots of ads for “chuffa” for the turkeys and wanted to get the real scoop on it. We have a seed farm not to far from us and we may elect to go buy seed from them instead of paying a premium for those bags you can buy through your favorite hunting stores. What should we plant, and when? What is good for the deer and what is good for the turkeys?

Thanks!

Chufa is mostly for turkeys. We planted that once with mixed results years ago. It grows in the summer. I plant Joint vetch mixed with alyce clover for the deer in the summer and it is great for deer and I think the turkeys like the clover and maybe the vetch. In September I plant crimson clover for the winter and the deer and turkeys both love this, up until it buds and dries out in the spring. Good luck with the land. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-faces-toast-beers.gif

I hunt South Mississippi. My food plot system has been for fall a mix of rye, wheat, oats, and clover(red/white). I mix it myself, secret blend. In the spring I plant soybeans, cowpeas, and corn. I mix the cowpeas in with the corn in some plots and mix p's in with soy beans in others. The key for good deer food is proper pH and timely fertilize.

mstrcamo remided me of the most important part. Get soil samples and get the ground right. This is the most important part. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-cool-shades-down.gif
